More about this organization
The illuminated building of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet on the waterfront at dusk, with boats in the foreground.

The Dutch National Opera & Ballet is one of the largest cultural organizations in the Netherlands and is located in the heart of Amsterdam. With over 650 colleagues representing more than 30 nationalities, we work together every day to enrich the lives of as many people as possible through the wonder, beauty, and meaning of opera and ballet. Every detail counts, which is why we value craftsmanship in every part of our organization. Would you like to use your experience and enthusiasm to contribute to this?

About the role

As an editor, you will serve as the stabilizing force in all editorial activities within the Dramaturgy Department at Dutch National Opera (DNO). You will support the dramaturgs with a wide range of publications, such as the season brochure, the Odeon magazine, program books, and libretto editions. You ensure the quality and consistency of texts. You oversee clear editorial processes, maintain an overview of schedules, and serve as a point of contact for colleagues from various departments.

The position is a 0.5 FTE position (1 FTE equals 38 hours per week). The workload is not evenly distributed throughout the year. For example, from October through March, the position may require approximately four days of work per week, while from April through September, it may require approximately one day of work per week. The exact details will be determined in consultation.

Your responsibilities:

  • planning and monitoring editorial processes; assigning writing and translation tasks; gathering and verifying data for publications;
  • editing texts for grammar, style, readability, and consistency, with an eye toward the intended audience;
  • writing biographies, general texts about DNO, and regular features in program booklets (such as synopses or short introductions);
  • editing and reviewing colleagues’ digital and other communications, in consultation with a dramaturg when necessary;
  • coordinating proofreading rounds and assisting with visual editing in collaboration with Dramaturgy and the Marketing, Communications, and Audience Department.

About you

You’re able to maintain a clear overview of complex production processes, ensuring quality, consistency, and structure in all our publications. You’ll ensure that copy is submitted on time in a professional and pleasant manner. You also have a natural flair for writing, with a tone and style that you adapt to the target audience and medium. You’re able to work four days a week during certain periods. Additionally, you have:

  • several years of experience as an editor;
  • an interest in art and culture, preferably opera (or a willingness to learn more about it);
  • excellent command of Dutch and English; (knowledge of a third language is a plus).

What we offer

  • a one-year contract with the possibility of a permanent position;
  • a full-time gross monthly salary ranging from €3,228 to €4,474, depending on knowledge and experience;
  • 15 vacation days and 2.5 ATV days (30 vacation days and 5 ATV days for full-time employees);
  • 8% vacation pay and a good pension plan;
  • an attractive package for our opera and ballet performances;
  • room for growth; we invest in your personal and professional development through educational and training opportunities;
  • a contribution toward a gym membership;
  • travel allowance (including a bicycle allowance for distances under 8 km)
  • Bicycle Plan with Tax Benefits
