(Senior) Compliance Officer

The position

As a Compliance Officer, you are the driving force who takes a pragmatic approach and can inspire colleagues in the field of compliance. You develop, maintain, and improve the internal compliance framework and ensure that it isn’t just on paper, but actually works in practice. You monitor, report, and present your findings directly to management and/or the Board of Supervisors; in short, your insights make all the difference.

Together with one other compliance colleague, you will serve as the primary point of contact for compliance issues and proactively advise colleagues and departments on laws and regulations and how to effectively translate them into policies and processes. In collaboration with the organization, you will identify risks and initiate improvements. In addition, you’ll work closely with front-line staff to implement and monitor control measures. You’ll raise compliance awareness through training and education and foster a culture of integrity and accountability. In this role, you’re not only an expert but also a connector who makes an impact at all levels of the organization. You’ll collaborate with front-line colleagues and offer assistance where needed.

About the team

As a Compliance Officer, you’ll be part of the Internal Control & Improvement department: the beating heart of our second line of defense within the three-lines model. This team works closely with all divisions of Vitens and plays a key role in fostering a culture of professional skepticism within the organization. We are a team in the process of being built, with plenty of room to grow together and make an impact. You’ll work in an environment where your expertise truly makes a difference and where, together with your colleagues, you’ll help build a robust compliance function that contributes to our sustainability goals.

Terms of Employment at a Glance:

• Maximum gross annual salary of €102,804 based on a 40-hour workweek, including the Flexible Employment Conditions Budget (16.51%).
• 31.5 vacation days.
• Extensive training opportunities and a personal employability budget of €1,000.
• Opportunities for flexible work arrangements, both from home and at Vitens offices in the Zwolle, Soestduinen, Arnhem, and Leeuwarden regions (based in Zwolle).

As an ideal candidate, you have:

• A completed associate's or bachelor's degree, preferably in law or business administration.
• Extensive knowledge of compliance.
• At least 7 years in a similar position, with experience in setting up a compliance program.
• Knowledge of and experience with consulting and monitoring.
• Decisive and capable of getting colleagues on board with a cultural shift in the areas of risk management and compliance.
• A hands-on approach, while still maintaining your role in a support capacity.
• You have strong analytical skills, are persuasive, and have a collaborative attitude; in addition, you possess empathy, strong advisory skills, and excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Experience in implementing and continuously improving processes and policies.
• Familiarity with or knowledge of the Drinking Water Act, environmental laws, and regulations is a plus.
