The Dutch National Opera & Ballet is one of the largest cultural organizations in the Netherlands, located in the heart of Amsterdam. With over 700 colleagues representing more than 30 nationalities, we work together every day to enrich the lives of as many people as possible through the wonder, beauty, and meaning of opera and ballet. Every detail counts. That is why we value craftsmanship in every part of our organization. You can see that reflected in everything we do.
You will be part of an HR department with 13 colleagues. The team consists of HR advisors, HR staff members, an HR project manager, and colleagues specializing in occupational health and safety, security, and internal communications. There is a wealth of in-house expertise, and communication lines are short. Within this team, you will have clear responsibility for Engineering & Workshops and several staff departments, comprising a total of approximately 275 employees.
Your primary focus will be on the behind-the-scenes departments: from the set design studio to stage technology, lighting, props, audio, video & media, facilities & building management, and theater technology maintenance. This means you’ll be working closely with the people who make our productions possible behind the scenes. You understand the dynamics of a production organization and know what that requires of teams, managers, and staff.
You serve as a point of contact for managers and employees regarding questions about employability, performance, development, absenteeism, employment conditions, and career paths. You contribute ideas on behavior and culture and help foster a socially safe and professional work environment. In doing so, you’ll seamlessly switch between providing advice, implementing solutions, and managing HR projects on topics such as sustainable employability, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, social safety, strategic workforce planning, and the further professionalization of HR processes. In this way, you’ll bridge the gap between policy and practice in an organization where expertise, creativity, and collaboration are central.
You have experience as an HR advisor or in a similar role. You are a confident and approachable conversation partner and can easily connect with people at various levels within the organization. You communicate clearly, listen attentively, and are not afraid to ask follow-up questions when necessary. You combine a coaching style with sound judgment and handle even complex or sensitive situations with care. You work independently, maintain a clear overview of files and projects, and are proficient with digital systems such as AFAS. Since we collaborate with many international colleagues, you are comfortable communicating in English.
