ARTIS is a gathering place where we bring nature closer to people in creative ways and facilitate discussion about how humans value, understand, and treat nature. Each year, more than 1.4 million people visit ARTIS Park, ARTIS Micropia, and ARTIS Groote Museum. The Audience & Programming cluster aims to create and ensure an optimal visitor experience and is responsible for all visitor-related operations. The cluster consists of the departments of Visitor Services, Volunteers & Educators, Park Management & Events, Marketing & Communications, and Education, Art & Heritage, and is responsible for the visitor catering services on behalf of ARTIS.

Since 1838, ARTIS has been a green oasis and gathering place in the heart of Amsterdam, where nature and culture come together. The historic ARTIS Park encompasses the zoo, the botanical garden, and the Planetarium. In addition, the ARTIS-Micropia museum inspires visitors with the invisible world of microbes, and the ARTIS-Groote Museum reveals the deeper connection between humans and nature. As a foundation and officially recognized charity, ARTIS is committed to strengthening our bond with nature, for a livable future for everyone.

Work

From a Museum Night with 10,000 visitors to luxury dinners, gatherings, and exclusive evening openings, the Park Management and Events department is responsible for sales and the coordination of all operational matters related to the wide variety of events that take place in and around ARTIS. These events are diverse not only in form but also in the various locations that ARTIS has to offer. Think of dining in the new Aquarium, drinks with a view of the giraffes, toasting under the stars in the Planetarium, or an educational program in ARTIS-Micropia. In organizing these activities, you’ll work closely with colleagues from various departments—from fundraising to security and from ARTIS volunteers to the technical staff.

In addition to all these events, the department is responsible for monitoring the visitor experience on a daily basis.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • You will serve as the point of contact and coordinator for upcoming events, from the time of final sale or internal request through to the conclusion of the event;
  • You provide advice, contribute ideas, and support both external and internal clients, while remaining alert to both opportunities and challenges on both the substantive and operational levels;
  • You will maintain contact with clients, partners, internal departments, and suppliers such as the catering and AV partners;
  • You will plan events down to the last detail, create scripts, and actively share them with all stakeholders;
  • You will coordinate operations during the event, from setup through to takedown;
  • You evaluate the events and make recommendations for structural improvements to the events or the process where necessary;
  • In addition to optimizing processes, you’ll find fulfillment in brainstorming and initiating creative concepts that transform our events into unforgettable experiences for our guests.

  • You are able to handle stress, organized, solution-oriented, and physically strong;

  • ARTIS and its museums are open 365 days a year. You are flexible and don’t mind working on weekdays, weekends, and holidays, as well as during peak periods and under time pressure;

What does ARTIS offer?

Imagine walking through the historic gates of ARTIS in the morning, where the gibbons welcome you with their songs. You’ll show the first visitors around, excited for the day ahead. During your onboarding, you’ll get to know all of ARTIS’s departments: from working in the gift shop to helping plant flower bulbs and cultivate microbes. Just like your work environment, your job is incredibly varied.

ARTIS offers you a job with responsibility and challenges at the most beautiful workplace in the Netherlands. A place where you can make a lasting difference. You’ll have a wide range of responsibilities and the authority to match, plenty of room for new initiatives and ideas, and at ARTIS, we maintain direct lines of communication between employees and managers. You’ll be versatile and work collaboratively with various departments at ARTIS to achieve results, all within an informal and friendly atmosphere.

We are initially offering you a twelve-month contract with the intention of extending it thereafter. ARTIS offers a generous travel allowance that encourages the use of sustainable transportation. You will also receive a contribution toward supplemental health insurance and enjoy discounts at other parks in the Netherlands.

In addition, ARTIS has a relaxation and prayer room, a gym, offers a fully vegetarian menu, and allows employees to exchange recognized holidays and commemorative days for other holidays such as Keti Koti and Eid al-Fitr. We also organize monthly get-togethers at our regular hangout, Eik en Linde, and employees can participate in events and lectures at ARTIS Park, the Planetarium, the Groote Museum, and Micropia.
