The Fries Museum is Friesland’s largest repository of cultural heritage and visual arts. The museum attracts, connects, and inspires both local and national visitors. One of its sections is the Fries Resistance Museum, which focuses on World War II, its aftermath, and the freedom we enjoy today.
The Princessehof Ceramics Museum is the only national museum in the northern Netherlands and is housed in an 18th-century city palace. The museum tells the story of international trade, exchange, and inspiration through an internationally renowned collection of European and East Asian ceramics.
The two museums are part of a single organization with approximately seventy employees.
As a collections management staff member, you serve as a vital link between the museum’s collections, the public, the curators, and your colleagues. Without you, there would be no exhibitions or knowledge exchange.
You play an essential role in ensuring the smooth flow of loans: you prepare objects for transport to other museums and regularly drive throughout the Netherlands (and sometimes abroad) to deliver or pick up objects. You also handle internal transport between the depot and our museums in Leeuwarden. You support our own exhibitions by assisting with the preparations for and installation and dismantling of our exhibitions.
You will also be involved in regular collection management tasks. These include moving objects within the storage facility, properly packing or repacking and registering objects, taking photographs of objects, preparing condition reports, and keeping track of object locations. It would be helpful if you have some experience with a collection registration system, or if you can quickly pick up this digital skill.
Finally, you may be assigned to other tasks as they arise. These can range from maintaining or relocating objects in an exhibition to assisting a photographer or researcher.
You will be part of the Knowledge & Collections department at the Fries Museum|Princessehof. You will work closely with your immediate colleagues in collections management: the registrars (loans), the registrar and data manager, the storage manager, and, of course, the collections management staff. In addition, you will collaborate with the curators in the same department, and occasionally with colleagues from other departments. The atmosphere in the workplace is informal and collegial. You will often be found in the storage facility (Kolleksjesintrum Fryslân), but also on the exhibition floor in one of the two museums.
You’ll be working at two of Friesland’s most beautiful museums and a stunning modern collection center.
This is a challenging and varied role at an organization with a social mission and a cultural function, where you will contribute to the presentation and development of special collections.
You will start with a one-year contract, with the intention of extending it. We follow the Museum Collective Labor Agreement, and this position is classified in pay grade 5. The monthly salary for this position ranges from €2,708 to €3,278 gross per month based on a 36-hour workweek, depending on your education and work experience. The fringe benefits also follow the Museum Collective Labor Agreement, with the exception of the pension fund (ABP).
We want to make sure you feel at home in the team and at the museum as quickly as possible, and we’d love to hear what you need to make that happen.
Are you our new colleague in the collections management team? If so, please email your cover letter and resume as soon as possible to Jeltsje Stobbe (Head of Knowledge & Collections) at vacature@friesmuseum.nl, with the subject line “collections management position.” You can also send any questions about the position to this email address.
