In collaboration with the current policy advisor, you will be responsible for developing policies related to professional competence. You will support the team leaders in identifying (both proactively and reactively gathered) training and exercise needs of the department’s clients, and you will assist the team leaders in drafting and submitting a comprehensive annual training and exercise program to the manager in a timely manner. You will monitor, analyze, and advise on developments, innovations, and opportunities for improvement regarding policy, products/services, and laws and regulations in the field of professional competence. You may be assigned to projects as a project leader.
You are an enthusiastic, collaborative policy advisor with strong analytical skills, and you have a natural talent for expressing ideas clearly and concisely in writing. You use your expertise and enthusiasm to advise the manager, the policy advisor, and the team leaders on a wide range of professional competence issues. You can do this very well independently and, where necessary, as part of a team. You can quickly see the connections between different departments/divisions and keep your focus on the common interest; you have a knack for “seeing the big picture.” Building support and coordination are central to your work. You are able to switch quickly between advising, tactical planning, and operational execution.
You find energy in developing policies and are able to offer advice, whether solicited or unsolicited. You enjoy working with others, but you’re also very capable of carrying out your work independently. You enjoy drafting proposals, annotations, and recommendations, and you’re quick to take on new projects.

Our Professional Competence Department consists of approximately 50 professionals and ensures that all active-duty firefighting personnel maintain a high level of professional competence in terms of knowledge, skills, and behavior. We play a leading role in fostering professional excellence, from firefighters to the duty commander.
The department consists of three teams: Learning and Development, Maintaining Professional Competence, and Developing Professional Competence (including the Amsterdam-Amstelland, Uithoorn, and Schiphol Fire Department Education, Training, and Drill Center—BOCAS). Your role supports the manager and the current policy advisor. Together with the team leaders, you form the management team of the Professional Competence Department.
