We are looking for an advisor for the Safety Team who will use their passion, courage, and expertise in radicalization and extremism to enhance safety within the municipality of Arnhem.
Arnhem is a municipality where urban vitality, a natural living environment, and economic strength reinforce one another. With more than 163,000 residents, Arnhem is the twelfth-largest city in the Netherlands and the capital of the province of Gelderland. The municipality of Arnhem draws on the strength and initiative of the community. It is the residents themselves who play a key role, and we strive to involve them in everything we do, so that we can truly build a future-proof city together! The core of our organization? Know Your City, Ownership, Results-Oriented, and Proximity.
Where will you be working?
The Safety Program Team works directly for the city and facilitates the administrative process. Complex issues, media attention, administrative interventions, and unforeseen incidents make dynamism and flexibility integral to our daily work. Approximately 25 employees work within the Safety Program, at both the city and neighborhood levels. We aim to achieve results through collaboration, by connecting thought and action, by being mindful of the societal impacts of our activities, and by effectively supporting our city administration. The primary goal of Arnhem’s safety policy is to reduce crime, nuisance, and citizens’ feelings of insecurity, and to prevent incidents, disturbances of the peace, and crises. Safety must be regarded as a core value in order to enable development as individuals, neighborhoods, and a city.
Challenges in the role
Who are we looking for?
Your added value lies in your strategic insight; you bring expertise in the field of radicalization and extremism, which you know how to translate into a pragmatic approach. Working in a dynamic environment energizes you. As an expert in radicalization, extremism, and polarization, you have the necessary practical experience. You switch easily between different levels: strategic, tactical, and operational. You may have a background in law enforcement, the security sector, or social work, which gives you a broad network. You are creative, solution-oriented, and a strong team player. You are willing to take risks when they may yield future benefits, and you connect easily with a diverse range of people while remaining confident and self-assured. You find working with various stakeholders engaging. You have the necessary political and administrative experience to excel in this role. You thrive when working with colleagues and foster a positive atmosphere in your team through your ability to keep things in perspective from time to time.
What will you be doing?
As a radicalization advisor, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive advice on our security policy at the program, management, and administrative levels. You will contribute to strategic security initiatives in close consultation with the director and the program manager. You will serve as a key point of contact for complex issues and act as the connecting link in coordination with partners (at the local, unit, and national levels).
An important component is the preventive approach: you ensure that the city’s network detects early signs of radicalization. You are the central hub of the city’s formal and informal networks, the network of professionals, and Arnhem’s key figures. You ensure that the network receives education and training to develop and maintain their skills. As an advisor, you are also jointly responsible for countering radicalization and extremism in the city. You do this by making a significant contribution to the person-centered approach to radicalization and extremism. Within the strategy to counter radicalization and extremism, Arnhem serves a regional role, which means you also support surrounding municipalities.
