Do you want to play a key role in healthcare that makes a difference? Are you BIG-registered, decisive, and do you have experience with end-of-life care? Then you are the Medical Manager we are looking for.
As a Medical Manager, you and your fellow Medical Managers are responsible for the quality of the euthanasia care we provide and for ensuring the highest standards of care in accordance with the Wtl (Act on the Assessment of Euthanasia on Request and Assistance with Suicide).
Your primary responsibility is to review requests for euthanasia that have been assessed by our outpatient teams (consisting of a doctor and a nurse). At the Euthanasia Expertise Center, we handle these cases beyond what is required by law and therefore with the utmost care. You will provide these cases with an independent medical and legal assessment to then decide whether euthanasia can be performed, must be rejected, or requires further investigation. This decision is made in a Multidisciplinary Consultation (MDC) that, depending on the case, is chaired by one or two Medical Managers. The MDOs are held digitally and take place regularly at the end of the day.
With your knowledge of the Wtl, you contribute to the level of care that our field requires. You stay constantly up to date on the latest medical and legal developments and actively share this knowledge with your colleagues, both within and outside the Euthanasia Expertise Center. You do this through peer consultation via the internal consultation line, drafting protocols and policy documents, and delivering lectures and presentations. You play a key role in the development of policy and the improvement of the quality of euthanasia care.
In addition, you will work closely with other healthcare professionals at the Euthanasia Expertise Center, such as case managers, outpatient physicians, outpatient nurses, psychiatrists, the legal advisor, and the ethics and development advisor.
You will take turns with your fellow Medical Managers to be available by phone to outpatient colleagues for consultation during evenings and weekends. You will participate in the weekly Medical Management meeting on Tuesdays and will be present at our office in The Hague at least one day a week. You will not have any hierarchical management responsibilities.
Because we believe in the importance of hands-on experience, as a staff physician at the Euthanasia Expertise Center, you will also work in the outpatient setting. This means that, on average, you will spend at least 4 and up to 9 hours per week handling euthanasia requests yourself, alongside a nurse, ensuring that you remain closely connected to daily practice. For more information about what this position entails.
With your natural authority and dedication, you know how to support your colleagues in complex and sensitive situations. You possess the communication skills to interact with people in difficult situations in a respectful and empathetic manner, and you excel at bridging differences. At the same time, you are naturally adept at making decisions, taking decisive action, and raising issues when it is in the interest of providing quality end-of-life care and fostering optimal professional collaboration. As a Medical Manager, you build connections, work collaboratively to improve care for our patients, and maintain a professional, reflective, and accountable approach.
You have excellent analytical skills and experience dealing with complex medical issues. You are bold and decisive, and you conduct yourself in a professional, discreet, and ethical manner. Your work experience as a physician enables you to fully understand and address the diversity and complexity of end-of-life care.
The Euthanasia Expertise Center is the leading center of expertise in the field of euthanasia care. We ensure that anyone who submits a request for euthanasia and is suffering unbearably and without prospect of improvement receives a thorough review of that request. By advising, guiding, supporting, and training physicians, we enable them to handle requests for euthanasia on their own. For patients with a request for euthanasia who cannot turn to their own doctor, we serve as a safety net. With our knowledge and experience, we contribute to euthanasia care in the Netherlands and to the public debate on this topic.
