About the European Cultural Foundation

Our founders established the European Cultural Foundation (ECF) in 1954, envisioning a united Europe where citizens take pride in their European identity—a place where they can live, express themselves, work, and dream freely, in diversity and harmony. Ever since, the ECF has promoted a sense of European identity by developing and supporting cultural initiatives that allow us to share, experience, and imagine Europe. We believe our mission is as urgent today as it was back then, as there are still many challenges that divide Europe, cause polarization, and lead to inequality. Culture has an important role to play here, helping to bridge these gaps, bringing people together, opening new paths, and discovering and imagining possibilities. We are a committed, ambitious, diverse, and open international foundation with a strong network and a long-standing reputation for building partnerships across Europe.

The European Cultural Foundation is looking for a:

Fund Development Coordinator

A passionate advocate and fundraising professional dedicated to culture and democracy in Europe

Location: Amsterdam
Closing date: August 28, 2022
Contract: 1 year, 0.8–1 FTE (30–37.5 hours/week), with the possibility of extension
Start date: October 1, 2022

About the role

ECF is a European foundation in its vision, mission, values, and outreach. Our activities are funded through lottery proceeds, EU tenders and grants (e.g., EU programs such as Erasmus+, Creative Europe, and Horizon Europe), co-funding from and partnerships with other foundations in Europe, contributions from program partners, and funding from private donors, endowments, and bequests. To coordinate our fundraising campaigns and activities, including the expansion of these opportunities, and to support our Sustainable Finance Task Force, we are hiring a Fund Development Coordinator. Due to the campaigning and storytelling aspects of the role, you will be part of our Communications team. You will work closely with the Sustainable Finance Task Force and other departments and will be jointly supervised by our Head of Communications and Head of Finance.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for a skilled and hands-on colleague with experience in fundraising, storytelling, campaigning, and networking, who will help ECF further expand our funding base.

In particular, the Fund’s development coordinator will:

  • Support the organization in the development and implementation of fundraising and donor campaigns;
  • Conduct desk research on funding opportunities and help develop appropriate fundraising strategies based on the project, funder, and sector;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing donors, partners, and funding partners;
  • Bring knowledge, experience, and a network to help launch a fundraising campaign;
  • Prepare and present storytelling pitch materials, both in writing and visually;
  • Launch fundraising communications on ECF’s channels, such as its website, print, and digital platforms;
  • Write proposals for funding and/or partnerships;
  • Oversee and support application processes (including keeping track of deadlines) and ensure timely and proper submissions, including European tenders;
  • Serve as the coordinator and secretariat for our Sustainable Finance Task Force, acting as a back-office support function and providing general support, as well as serving as a liaison between our Finance and Communications departments;
  • Help us maintain our contact database;
  • Monitor the budget for fundraising activities.

Who are you?

You are a passionate and creative campaigner, communicator, networker, and fundraising professional who serves as a skilled, cross-departmental coordinator of our fundraising activities. You believe in ECF’s mission and vision and are eager to contribute to a just and peaceful Europe through culture.

In addition, we believe it is important that you meet the following requirements:

  • Be based in the Netherlands and hold a valid work permit;
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in a similar role;
  • Have proven experience in fundraising, particularly with private donors, foundations, and bequests; preferably at the European level;
  • Be a proactive, hands-on person and a confident team player;
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills as well as conceptual skills;
  • You are a good planner and work in an organized and structured manner;
  • Are passionate about international cultural collaboration and Europe as a cultural project;
  • Are willing to travel and attend networking events outside of office hours;
  • Possess intercultural sensitivity and the skills needed to communicate with various partners and organizations in the Netherlands and Europe.

When joining ECF, we ask that you confirm that you possess the following competencies relevant to the role:

ANALYTICAL – You grasp the essence of complex issues through logical reasoning, by investigating potential causes, separating key messages from the mass of details, and recognizing their interdependence.

AWARENESS – You are aware of cultural nuances and sensitive to the values of diversity, equality, and inclusion. You are able to put these values into practice on a daily basis. You recognize the value of diversity and are able to foster a sense of inclusion and belonging among colleagues and stakeholders across cultures and belief systems.

CONCEPTUAL THINKING – You have the ability to view the organization as a whole, understand how its various parts are interdependent, and assess how the organization relates to its external environment. You can identify, conceptualize, and solve complex problems; think through and work with abstract ideas; and develop solutions to complex issues.

ENTREPRENEURIAL – You are able to identify and pursue new opportunities, bring them to fruition, and take calculated risks. Identify new opportunities for the organization and take action to capitalize on them. Develop new projects and programs and/or form new partnerships.

FLEXIBILITY – You can adapt to changing circumstances and, when necessary, adjust your approach or behavior in order to achieve the desired goal. You can anticipate change, take the initiative to adapt, and encourage others to adjust to change.

INTEGRITY – You demonstrate strong moral and ethical principles and strive to do the right thing. You are able to build relationships and trust based on honesty, reliability, accountability, and consistency. You adhere to ECF’s Code of Conduct.

NETWORKING – You know how to build and maintain relationships to help achieve your personal goals and those of the organization.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING – You effectively coordinate activities, time, and resources to achieve objectives. You are able to manage, coordinate, and monitor (program, communication, and advocacy) activities and collaborate with colleagues and partners to accomplish mutually agreed-upon tasks.

We offer:

  • An opportunity to create, thrive, and grow as part of an international team;

  • Flexible work arrangements that combine working from the office and working remotely;
  • The fun and joy that comes from working with a diverse team on things that matter;
  • Training and development opportunities for skills and competencies relevant to the role;
  • Salary ranging from EUR 2,805 to EUR 4,062 gross per month, on a full-time basis, including a13th month’s salary, an 8% vacation allowance, and a benefits package;
  • A one-year contract, with the possibility of extension, and 4–5 days a week (0.8–1 FTE).
