Would you like to help make homes, businesses, and other buildings in the Netherlands more sustainable—and thereby contribute to a sustainable society? Do you enjoy working as part of a collaborative, results-oriented team? And are you interested in translating technical knowledge of energy systems into practical policy solutions? If so, we’re looking for you.

What will you be doing?

The heat transition requires decisions regarding technology, infrastructure, policy, and organization. As an experienced researcher/project manager, you will work at the intersection of these fields.Youwill address issues related to, for example, district heating networks, heat pumps, energy storage, grid congestion, and cooling. You will acquire and lead research and consulting projects commissioned by companies, government agencies, and civil society organizations. You will do this in collaboration with colleagues from the Built Environment team, as well as with colleagues from other departments, such as our industry experts, energy specialists, or environmental economists. You will work in an inspiring environment and often manage multiple projects simultaneously for various clients.

Even if you don’t have much experience with business development and project management yet, we encourage you to apply for this position. You’ll have the opportunity to grow into these roles with us.

In this role:

  • You advise municipalities, businesses, and other stakeholders on the technical, strategic, and policy-related decisions involved in the heat transition;
  • You will conduct technical and economic analyses of energy systems in the built environment, provide substantive guidance for research, and be responsible for the quality of the final results;
  • translate your technical insights and model results into policy decisions and actionable recommendations;
  •  You will work alongside modelers, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders.

Examples of projects include:

  • Technical-economic analysis of demand-side response options for residential energy consumption.
  • Scenario analyses for making industrial parks and greenhouse horticulture areas more sustainable.
  • Geographic analysis and feasibility study of High-Temperature Storage (HTS) for district heating networks.

You can find more information about our studies at Built Environment Policy - CE Delft and Reports - CE Delft.

Who are you?

  • You have a strong interest in sustainable energy systems and understand how policy and decision-making work.
  • You can translate complex technical issues into clear recommendations for policymakers and executives.
  • You have strong analytical skills and work in a structured manner.
  • You have strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information in a way that is easy for non-technical audiences to understand.
  • You enjoy and are capable of organizing projects, leading multidisciplinary project teams, and understanding the perspectives of various stakeholders.
  • You enjoy collaborating with colleagues and external partners, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, and you want to use your expertise to help develop concrete solutions for making homes, businesses, and cities more sustainable.

What are we looking for?

  • We are looking for someone with a technical background and an interest in policy.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical or energy-related field (e.g., mechanical engineering, engineering management, or environmental engineering).
  • You have approximately 4–8 years of work experience.
  • You have experience with energy or heating issues, preferably in the built environment.
  • You have experience with quantitative analysis and consulting or research projects.
  • Preferably experience in acquiring and managing projects.
  • You have a good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

Experience with Python, GIS, energy system modeling, or data analysis is a plus.

Do you recognize yourself in most of this profile, but not in every single point? If so, we strongly encourage you to apply anyway.

What do we offer?

  • A meaningful role in which you directly contribute to a sustainable future.
  • A lot of responsibility and the freedom to shape your role yourself.
  • Collaboration with subject matter experts and modelers at a renowned research institute.
  • An open, informal, personal, and supportive work environment.
  • Our headquarters are in Delft, and we also offer the option to work from our office in Utrecht.
  • A competitive salary and excellent benefits, including flexible working hours, free lunch, part-time work, and the option to work from home. We also offer flexible scheduling for vacation and holidays. This allows employees of all faiths to take time off on their respective religious holidays.
