
Are you an expert in social science research, up to date on current developments in the arts, education, and/or arts education, and eager to share your knowledge with students through mentoring?
The Master’s program in Art Education at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) is seeking a Research Instructor (0.2 FTE) effective August 15, 2023.
You will teach literary research and empirical research to both first- and second-year students in the program. You will guide them in conducting small-scale qualitative research in the field of arts education. This research may be evaluative, exploratory, descriptive, diagnostic, comparative, or intervention-based.
You will provide individual guidance on defining the topic and research question, searching for, analyzing, and synthesizing relevant literature, and correctly citing sources (APA). In addition, you will guide students in designing, conducting, and reporting on a (practice-oriented) empirical study, and you will evaluate the individual studies.
You have completed a relevant degree at the university level and have relevant work experience; a current PhD program or a completed PhD is preferred. You have extensive experience conducting social science research and are familiar with current developments in the arts, education, and/or arts education. You are an enthusiastic and proactive person with a coaching-style approach to teaching, and you enjoy the challenge of collaborating with a co-instructor.
The Master’s program in Art Education is an interdisciplinary, two-year part-time program for art teachers and art educators (with a bachelor’s degree) in the fields of visual arts and design, dance, music, and theater. The program collaborates with the Art Education research group and maintains close ties with the professional field.
The Master’s program in Art Education is administered by the Breitner Academy, which is part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK), a higher professional education institution specializing in arts education that offers programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
The Master’s program in Art Education is housed in the AHK LearningLab at the Marineterrein Amsterdam, located between NEMO and the Scheepvaartmuseum and within walking distance of Central Station. Together with the AHK MakerSpace and the AHK Culture Club, we contribute to diversity in this area—a testing ground for learning, working, and living in a livable city, surrounded by organizations focused on art, technology, and sustainability.

A pleasant work environment in a beautiful location on the Marineterrein. Appointment and compensation are in accordance with the collective labor agreement for higher professional education (CAO-HBO). The position is classified in pay scale 11 (min. €3,881, max. €5,332 gross per month for full-time employment). The starting salary depends in part on education, experience, and most recent salary. The AHK offers attractive employment conditions, such as an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, an ABP pension plan, a generous vacation policy, generous travel and telecommuting allowances, and opportunities for study and professional development. The appointment is for one year, and the regular workday is Tuesday.
