More about this organization
A modern white museum with curved architecture and a dark sculpture in the foreground, surrounded by a green garden and flowering trees.

The Chabot Museum positions itself as a museum of international expressionism housed in one of Rotterdam’s most beautiful villas—a gem of the Nieuwe Bouwen movement in Rotterdam’s Museumpark. The museum manages a broad collection of works by the Rotterdam artist Henk Chabot (1894–1949), his contemporaries, and contemporary kindred spirits. It offers a small-scale, tranquil museum environment with ample space for a personal experience of modern and contemporary art, architecture, and history.

The Chabot Museum Rotterdam is seeking a business manager for 30 hours per week.

The organization can be described as a flexible, learning-oriented network that develops exhibitions and activities both offline and online, and both within and outside its own walls, in collaboration with various partners and target groups in Rotterdam and beyond. In addition to exhibitions and activities at the museum, two robust program lines have been formulated in conjunction with one another: Land van Chabot (centered on the place where the artist lived and worked just outside Rotterdam) and With Chabot to the Van Nelle UNESCO World Heritage Site. The diverse stories related to the artist’s work and life and his era consistently prove to be a timely source of inspiration that can lead to surprising new connections and insights.

The current senior administrator is retiring. This creates an opportunity for the growing organization to take the next step toward a new and broader role for this position.

The position

As a business leader, you are responsible for ensuring optimal business operations.

The Business Manager is therefore responsible for various support services that are crucial to the organization’s smooth operation, such as finance, human resources, facilities (a national historic landmark), and IT. You will also be responsible for internal operations. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.

We are looking for an inspiring and motivating colleague. You are entrepreneurial and willing to take (calculated) risks. You think in terms of opportunities and are decisive and results-oriented. As a business leader, you do not aspire to be the public face of the organization. You are approachable, interested, and have a consistent, coaching-style leadership approach. You bring a relevant professional network with you. Finally, you are customer-focused, flexible, and have a strong sense of organizational awareness.

What will you be doing?

  • You are responsible for the museum’s operations, internal organization, and the management of its staff and volunteers.
  • You will be responsible for implementing the strategy for financial data processing, analysis, and reporting; (financial) risk management; financial statements and the annual report; and the planning and control cycle.
  • You will help draft the multi-year policy plan, budget, and annual work plans.
  • You will oversee the implementation of HR policy;
  • You will initiate and develop new initiatives and partnerships in the area of business operations.
  • You will systematically increase the organization’s own revenue. This will be achieved through, among other things, policy development and implementation in the areas of fundraising, grants, corporate partnerships, and contributions.
  • You will help create a welcoming atmosphere at the museum for visitors, professionals in the visual arts, the press and media, representatives of funding agencies, foundations, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

What are you bringing?

  • A shared commitment to the museum’s mission and vision.
  • A college or university-level standard of work and thinking, strategic thinking skills, and the ability to assess consequences at the tactical/operational level.
  • You have experience in administrative management, project management, and organizational development.
  • You know what it’s like to work in a political and administrative context and can navigate it with ease.
  • You have knowledge of and/or experience working in an organization at the intersection of market and culture, with an understanding of the museum sector.
  • An interest in issues related to diversity and inclusion.
  • You have a clear understanding of the positions and interests of the various stakeholders and are aware of how your own behavior influences that of others.
  • Ideally, you live in Rotterdam or the immediate vicinity.
  • You are willing to work on weekends from time to time.

What do we offer?

The museum, originally a private initiative, offers an inspiring work environment within a growing organization in the heart of Rotterdam. An organization that has developed over the past decades into a widely supported museum with a dynamic and varied program both within and beyond the museum walls. Here, visual arts, (modern) architecture, heritage, nature, and education come together naturally through the lens of the artist Henk Chabot, his contemporaries, and (contemporary) kindred spirits. In a small-scale environment, you will help shape strategy and policy while also implementing them, together with a team of enthusiastic staff and volunteers.

The gross monthly salary ranges from a minimum of €3,532 to a maximum of €4,738 (scale 11 of the museum collective bargaining agreement) for full-time employment, excluding 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
