Working to improve accessibility and revitalize the economy. That is the mission of the 21 municipalities that have joined forces in the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Region (MRDH). Are you the consultant who can tackle the complex field of public transportation with energy and authority, and who can implement, promote, and advise on the regional public transportation safety policy? Then apply for this challenging position.
The MRDH is the premier partnership of, for, and by 21 municipalities in the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan region. Our employees enjoy working in a dynamic organization with a variety of social missions, roles, and responsibilities. One of these is to strengthen public transportation in the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan region in collaboration with the municipalities and the regional and urban public transit companies EBS, HTM, and RET. With us, you help shape the future of the people who live, work, and enjoy their leisure time here. There are currently 2.4 million of them, and another 400,000 residents are expected to join us by 2040. Transporting passengers safely, efficiently, and quickly is a complex challenge, especially in a region that is growing and becoming increasingly crowded. That is why we must make the best choices to keep the region running, together with all stakeholders.
The Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Region (MRDH) is responsible for physical safety in public transportation. That will also be your focus. You will be working within the Public Transportation Department. You will play a coordinating role in various policy processes, projects, and programs, as well as studies and evaluations, particularly at the intersection of public transportation, physical safety, and the spatial development of the city and region. The task is to keep the public transportation system safe and improve it every day, while keeping an eye on other challenges facing the MRDH municipalities and transit operators.
You hold an autonomous and independent position within the organization when it comes to safety. Drawing on your knowledge and expertise, you advise senior management and the portfolio holder on the safety of the public transportation system, and you serve as the point of contact for handling and analyzing public transportation incidents. You serve as a key stakeholder in major public transit development projects, with a focus on safeguarding safety interests and advising on permitting. You hold a unique role within the MRDH. You perform all these duties based on an established safety framework for the public transit system within the MRDH.
You know how to offer advice with authority and confidence, win people over, and stand your ground when necessary. With your analytical skills, advisory abilities, and keen sense of human relations and social interests, you are a valuable partner in implementing security policy at the MRDH. You identify with the MRDH’s organizational values: openness, courage, and enjoyment.

The Rotterdam-The Hague Metropolitan Region is a voluntary joint arrangement among 21 municipalities. As an extension of local government, we have been granted the status of a transport region by the national government. This means we have statutory responsibilities in the area of traffic and transportation. For example, we formulate regional traffic and transportation policy. And as the contracting authority for regional and urban public transportation in the Rotterdam-The Hague Metropolitan Region, we grant concessions to transportation companies. We also provide subsidies for various traffic and transportation projects and for the management, maintenance, and replacement of public transportation infrastructure. For this purpose, we receive approximately €600 million annually directly from the national government. In addition, it is our task to improve the economic business climate in areas such as work locations (industrial parks, retail, offices), economic innovation (field labs, startups), and the connection between education and the labor market. For this, we receive a contribution—€6.8 million in 2023—from the 21 municipalities.
