More about this organization
A woman with red hair is working on a computer with a digital drawing program or animation on the screen.

Would you like to help our students from all walks of life succeed in their studies and advance their professional development? And would you like to work with us to create innovative, inclusive, and creative education in the world of gaming? Then we’re looking for you!

Where will you be working?

At HKU, students from diverse backgrounds, with different stories and talents, learn from and with one another. We believe that diversity of perspectives is essential for creativity. With over 4,000 students, HKU is the largest university of the arts in the Netherlands and one of the largest educational institutions in Europe focused on art, culture, and the creative industries. HKU offers a wide range of programs across nine academic departments.

At HKU Games, the art of gaming takes center stage. Games are the most complex, engaging, and modern art form in existence—one that cannot exist without a player. Games have tremendous transformative power and make an impact on individuals, the professional field, and society. HKU Games offers the following bachelor’s programs: Game Art, Games Design, and Game Development.

The program is organized and delivered across the four academic years, with each year supported by a team consisting of a program director, a tutor, and a (core) instructor. For the other instructors on the team, the tutor is responsible for monitoring the students’ professional and academic development. The tutoring team for the Games program consists of three tutors.

What will you be doing?

  • You support students in finding their own learning path and help them grow—personally, professionally, and creatively—so that students feel seen and heard, regardless of their background, experience, or learning style;
  • You will guide students throughout their individual academic journey as they make choices within their program; you will discuss these choices with them and encourage and monitor their progress.
  • You identify what needs to be included in the curriculum to help students excel or prevent them from falling behind;
  • You identify academic delays and advise students on steps they can take.
  • You will assess the accommodations available for students with disabilities and communicate with the various stakeholders involved;
  • You will contribute to meetings, open houses, information sessions, field trips, teacher training days, and similar events;
  • Teaching duties, such as those related to student personal development, peer supervision, and group collaboration, may be part of the job.

What are we looking for?

  • You have a college-level education or equivalent experience in coaching, education, or mentoring in another context;
  • Be able to work independently within established guidelines;
  • Experience coaching and mentoring students and/or adolescents;
  • Good spoken and written Dutch;
  • Experience with educational processes is a plus;
  • An affinity for and knowledge of our fields of work is a plus;
  • An interest in game design is a plus;

What do you bring to the table?

  • We value different ways of communicating and collaborating. Whether you listen attentively or connect enthusiastically—your style adds value to our team;
  • You can strike a good balance between the students’ well-being and what is feasible at HKU;
  • You are able to adapt to different situations and interact effectively with managers, instructors, and other colleagues, as well as with students and, on occasion, external student advisors;
  • You are sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and needs of students and help foster an inclusive learning environment;
  • You ask the right questions, recognize signs, identify areas for improvement, and discuss these issues with students, student groups, and colleagues;
  • You are resilient and able to set boundaries. Issues at work can be intense, but you know how to handle them;

What do we offer?

  • A versatile position starting in mid-January in a dynamic and informal work environment, where you’ll be expected to take initiative;
  • The gross monthly salary for a full-time position is in pay scale 9 or 10, depending on education and experience, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for higher professional education (€3,377–€5,378), excluding an 8% vacation allowance and a year-end bonus (8.3%);
  • The benefits package is excellent, including a generous leave policy, membership in the ABP pension fund, and a commuting allowance;
  • HKU strives to create a work environment where everyone feels welcome, valued, and safe. We provide opportunities for personal growth and for initiatives focused on inclusion and equality. That is why HKU is committed to investing in motivated and well-trained employees; this means, among other things, that you have access to time and resources dedicated to professional development and long-term employability.

Would you like more information and/or to apply?

  • Even if you don’t meet all the requirements, do you think you’d be a good fit for this position? We encourage you to apply anyway.
  • If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Katy den Tex, a tutor at HKU Games, atkaty.dentex@hku.nl;
  • You can apply until Sunday, October 26, by clicking the“Apply” button;
  • Thefirstround of job interviews is scheduled for week 44, on Wednesday, October 29.

A cover letter is not required. However, we would like to receive your resume and your answers to the following questions.

  • What appeals to you about this job?
  • What do you think are the most important considerations when mentoring students?
  • As a tutor, what skills do you bring to the role?
  • How does this job fit into your career path?

This position is being advertised both internally and externally. In the event of equal qualifications, internal candidates will be given priority. In our selection process, we recognize the value that diversity brings to our organization. Recruiting agencies are asked not to contact us regarding this position.
