Do you have experience training diverse groups of people in behavioral change? Are you skilled at turning resistance into constructive behavior? In short: do you know how to get people moving? Then training at Trafieq is the perfect fit for you! Trafieq is seeking experienced behavioral change trainers for the Educational Measures for Behavior and Traffic program to deliver courses at various locations.
What is an educational measure?
Educational Measures, imposed by the CBR, are behavioral training programs focused on traffic safety. You may be required to complete a mandatory educational measure if you have committed a serious traffic violation, such as driving under the influence or engaging in unsafe behavior on the road. Over the course of several half-days, participants gain theoretical knowledge and insight into their own behavioral choices.
Your role in our organization
You will work independently within the framework of the educational program you are teaching. In this role, you will be supervised and, when necessary, guided by a coordinating trainer. Our support team will schedule your courses (based on your availability) and assist you with any questions you may have.
The target audience for your courses
Get ready for a lively group of people! They are often men (in the EMG/LEMG courses, 90 to 95% of the group consists of male drivers), with strong opinions, who sometimes have their own interpretations of laws and regulations. It’s up to you to (continue to) see the person behind the traffic violator. Because, of course, they are all people, with their own struggles, stories, and qualities.
Your work
At Trafieq, you will be teaching the EMG (Educational Measure for Behavior and Traffic) and/or the LEMG (Light Educational Measure for Behavior and Traffic).
This multi-day course has a set schedule. You will teach the course at one of the CBR locations in Amsterdam, Assen, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Utrecht, or Zwolle, or at our own location in Zeist.
The course materials have already been put together for you. Each course group has 12–14 participants.
Those are the facts and figures, but what do you actually do? That can’t be captured in numbers. In short: building connections and inspiring people to take responsibility for their own behavior.
Here's how you do that:
- You help people acknowledge their own role in what happened: the traffic stop, the police report, the criminal record, the traffic school, the fines—but also the shame that comes with it;
- You work according to a standardized program in which the content and guidelines are clearly defined;
- you build a bridge between that structured program, the law, and all the beautiful, intense, and moving stories and experiences shared within the group;
- You can see resistance among students (also) as a way for them to cope with their own internal struggles;
- You use your unique perspective (and experience as a fellow road user) to uncover the underlying reasons behind sometimes bizarre traffic decisions without compromising your neutrality, using motivational interviewing techniques;
- You put yourself in the participants’ shoes in everyday (traffic) situations and consider the frustrations they experience, and discuss these in a neutral, non-judgmental manner;
- You smoothly navigate between what motivates students (making money/entrepreneurship, instant gratification, status, a fast-paced and hectic lifestyle as a source of dopamine, etc.) and what is or isn’t legally permitted. You then link this, in an accessible way, to the importance of maintaining (or regaining) their driver’s license;
- You clarify the balance between emotion and reason. Between effect and cause. Between "me" and "the other."
Your profile
You must have completed at least a bachelor’s degree (a legal requirement for this position) and, preferably, have majored in psychology, pedagogy, andragogy, communication studies, or educational science.
Our ideal trainer:
- is available 2 to 4 days a week, including Saturdays (you will teach at least four classes a year on Saturdays);
- has demonstrable extensive experience as a trainer;
- has at least two years of work experience in the field covered by the required prior education;
- can effectively handle resistance and channel it into constructive behavior;
- is streetwise, reflective, and eager to learn;
- can provide a Certificate of Good Conduct;
- encourages behavioral change;
- can have a positive influence on group processes;
- has a natural advantage;
- is a star at motivational interviewing;
- preferably has experience conducting training in a structured setting (not required);
- can conduct educational discussions related to cognitive dissonance ("I know I'm not supposed to, but…") and/or external attribution ("It's not my fault, but…");
- can employ various teaching methods (such as group discussions, group conversations, and educational dialogues);
- can handle a wide range of behaviors within a group;
- coaches from a place of connection rather than authority;
- trains in a directive manner: you know what you’re doing and why, and can convey that clearly to the participants;
- can conduct fast-paced, participant-driven training while maintaining contact with the participants;
- can convey information concisely.
