The position
As a Management and Maintenance Team Leader, you’ll make a difference in the day-to-day management and maintenance of the entire Amsterdamse Bos. It’s a unique role thanks to the diversity of the environment—and, consequently, your work. From the daily care of natural meadows to a food forest, from trails and bridges to getting the Bos ready for the events held there. In the Amsterdamse Bos, you can truly enjoy yourself. Together with your team, you ensure that the Bos is clean, intact, and safe for visitors and for nature. You’ll work with a professional forest and nature team, garage and technical service staff, and a large group of work participants (Boswerk).
The team consists of approximately 40 employees. You will manage the team in collaboration with coordinators and job coaches. You will be a member of the management team and contribute to discussions within project groups on organization-wide issues. For the group of participants in the workforce, you take into account varying levels of knowledge and skills, different interests, and the extent to which employees are limited in performing their duties. Your team also offers learning and work opportunities to interns and civil servants from the City of Amsterdam who are returning to work. You are also closely involved with the volunteers who are deployed in daily management and maintenance.
The Forest is facing many new challenges, such as increasing visitor numbers, climate change, and efforts to enhance biodiversity. This calls for an organization that can adapt to these changes. Currently, the Management and Maintenance team is addressing the following priorities:
- Establishing the framework for expanding the labor force: recruitment and turnover, absenteeism support, and administrative and organizational integration within the Work and Income Department.
- Professionalizing day-to-day management and maintenance in terms of workflows, training, machine deployment, and the use of supporting digital systems, in close collaboration with the Integrated Asset Management team.
Here's what you do on an average day
- You start the day with your coordinators and supervisors to discuss the work schedule for the coming days and other current matters.
- You have a meeting with your colleague, the Public and Media Team Leader, to discuss staff assignments for the upcoming event season. You will ensure that this information is entered into the new digital scheduling system.
- In P&O, the municipal HR system, you update the latest actions. In the hallway, you briefly speak with the team leader of Integrated Asset Management about the funding for the purchase of the new mowers.
- After your first few hours at the office, you’ll cycle past the Parks Department crew, who are using a cherry picker to perform routine maintenance on the trees along Beukenlaan, to see how things are going.
- Back at the office, you’ll meet with the Boswerk coordinator and colleagues from Sterk in Werk to discuss the intake of new participants and support for those on sick leave. Afterward, you’ll discuss what kind of work might be a good fit for the new participant.
- Action must be taken for all employees at Bos to better organize the management of sick leave at Bos. You will develop this into a proposal to be discussed by the Bos Management Team.
- At the shipyard, the men are coming back from work, and you go outside to chat with them about how their day went.
- To wrap up the day, there will be a project group meeting on major and replacement maintenance for the children’s pools. Your input will help us gain a clear understanding of the costs and resources required for day-to-day management and maintenance.
