More about this organization
A modern building by CODA featuring a glass facade, a rounded upper section with wooden slats, and red flags against a blue sky.

Being able to read, speak, and write Dutch well is essential for fully participating in society. But knowing how to use a computer, tablet, or smartphone is also a basic skill that you need to master. The number of people with low literacy skills in Apeldoorn accounts for 11% of the total population. This includes both native Dutch speakers and non-native speakers. The Taalhuis Apeldoorn aims to reduce low literacy and to strengthen and expand language, math, and digital skills. The Taalhuis has a physical location in the CODA Central Library and offers an extensive program in collaboration with its partners. We are currently seeking a Taalhuis instructor for the Taalhuis.

You & the Language House
As a Taalhuis instructor, you work with colleagues and partners to ensure that people seeking language and digital skills be referred to appropriate support as soon as possible. You are creative and enterprising, and you think outside the box. You actively engage with the target audience to identify their needs and develop solutions. You preferably have a background in education, Experience teaching and providing coaching support to adults with low literacy skills (NT1/NT2) and volunteers. You are an open, helpful, and communicative person who listens to others’ learning needs and actively seeks the best solution. You are comfortable approaching organizations, schools, stores, recreational facilities, potential partners, and workplaces where the target group is employed. You actively engage in conversation to identify the need and propose a solution. The quality of the program offered by the Taalhuis and the personal results that can be achieved are our top priority.

What will you be doing?

  • You will conduct intake interviews with language learners (NT1 and NT2, not required to complete integration) and digital literacy learners;
  • You recruit, train, and mentor language volunteers, and you lead the Basic Training for language volunteers;
  • You carefully match volunteers and participants with appropriate opportunities;
  • You will provide guidance to volunteers on the pedagogical design of the learning program and the accompanying teaching materials;
  • You will maintain the registration system for participants and volunteers (both those who have been trained and those who have yet to be trained), and you will record all interactions with the Taalhuis;
  • You hold location-specific consultation hours;
  • You monitor the quality of the services provided;
  • You keep track of the participants' results;
  • You provide information and training to employers and employees about the Taalhuis and the issue of low literacy.

 What are you bringing?

  • You have completed a relevant associate’s degree program (such as a teaching degree, a degree in Dutch, or another relevant program and/or training modules for NT1/NT2 teachers);
  • You have experience teaching adults with low literacy skills (NT1/NT2) and providing demand-driven, coaching-based support to participants;
  • You have knowledge of NT1/NT2 teaching methods and teaching materials for adults, as well as language programs focused on formal and informal learning;
  • You have proven experience in managing and coordinating volunteers;
  • You live in the municipality of Apeldoorn or have a driver's license;
  • You have knowledge of and an interest in education, as well as educational, social, and cultural developments;
  • You are self-reliant, digitally savvy, results-oriented, and have a flexible work ethic.

What do we offer?

  • A competitive salary based on the Public Libraries Collective Bargaining Agreement. You will be placed in pay grade 8 (minimum €2,860 and maximum €3,665 gross per month for a 36-hour workweek). The salary depends on your knowledge, experience, and skills;
  • A package of attractive benefits and services, including a membership to the CODA Library, free admission to the CODA Museum, and reimbursement for your commuting expenses.
