Where (kilometers of) encyclopedias, 500 database licenses, and a multi-year budget cycle all come together. That’s the KB in The Hague. And it is the place where you, as a strategic advisor for operations, contribute to the further development of the KB. Together with the executive team member responsible for operations, the managing director, and your colleagues in operations—as well as those from other parts of the organization—you help the KB tackle complex issues and contribute to achieving its goals.
Will you make it happen?
As a strategic advisor at the KB, you’ll have a unique opportunity to engage with all aspects of our organization. The KB is a complex organization, but with your clear vision and constructive approach, you’ll be able to drive change. You’ll be a confident and capable partner to the executive team and your colleagues in the business units. The executive team consists of six people: the CEO and five portfolio holders.
It’s up to you to help shape the future of our organization, with a focus on strategic goals related to organizational development—specifically within the operational management portfolio. This includes integrating strategic workforce development, establishing a flexible multi-year budgeting cycle, achieving our sustainability goals, and promoting diversity and inclusion. And there’s more. You are the strategic advisor who:
- in consultation with, among others, members of the management team and subject-matter experts, prepares financial recommendations and oversees their effective implementation and assurance;
- works with the relevant colleagues to prepare periodic reports, linking the substantive KB objectives to the financial resources;
- works with the strategic advisors from the other portfolios to contribute ideas on other strategic issues and ensure consistency;
- coordinates the various deliverables (such as block reports);
In addition, you will provide advice on the organization’s long-term policy and the financial impact of major initiatives on it.
Are you the talent we're looking for?
We’re curious to learn more about you and what makes you special. Is it your ability to see the big picture within a complex, ever-changing organization, combined with a self-starter mentality? That’s great. Especially if, for this position as Strategic Advisor for Organization & Development, you can also bring the following:
- a university-level education and relevant training;
- At least 5 years of work experience in strategic development or in a similar role at a medium-sized organization;
- experience in leading change initiatives;
- preferably experience with government finance and the public sector (this is a plus);
- the drive to improve the KB’s operations and achieve goals together;
- a collaborative and organization-sensitive approach.
What can you count on?
When you choose the KB, you’re also choosing excellent employment benefits. To be specific, your choice includes:
- a gross monthly salary between €5,501 and €7,075 (pay grade 12);
- to begin with a one-year contract with the possibility of a permanent position;
- a good work-life balance. You’ll get 42 days off, and we’re happy to discuss working from home and flexible hours with you;
- 100% reimbursement of your public transportation costs;
- pension accrual through the ABP pension fund, with the KB paying 70% of the contribution;
- a thirteenth month's salary (8.33%).

What is it like to work at the KB?
The KB is the national library of the Netherlands. What more people should know is that the KB is innovating. Because that’s exactly what we’re doing! Together with 500 colleagues and our network partners, we are committed to making the Netherlands smarter, more skilled, and more creative every day. We achieve this, for example, by collecting, preserving, and sharing all digital publications from and about our country. A future infrastructure is indispensable for this, which is why our IT roadmap is extensive.
We embrace the differences among all our colleagues. In fact, we believe that differences make a team stronger. We see this firsthand in our diverse team working on organizational and development goals, which involves colleagues both within and outside the operations portfolio. In addition, you’ll also form a team with the four other strategic advisors for the other portfolios. How do your future colleagues describe the atmosphere? As informal, exciting, and warm.
How do I apply for this job opening?
Would you like to contribute to our innovation efforts? Great! We can’t wait to receive your resume and cover letter. Could you also describe in your cover letter your experience with change initiatives in the areas of organizational development and operations, and what your role was in those initiatives? This will help us see how well your experience aligns with the requirements of this position.
