Senior Privacy Officer to lead NWO in the areas of privacy and the GDPR

Are you passionate about privacy and interested in helping a professional organization become more mature in this area? We could really use your knowledge, expertise, and advisory skills here at NWO. We’re committed to improving our approach to privacy, and we’d love to invest in you!

You will work closely with your fellow Senior Privacy Officer; together, you are responsible for ensuring privacy at NWO. You are true ambassadors in the field of privacy and data protection. In this role, you will also collaborate with the privacy coordinators in the various organizational units to implement and enforce privacy legislation and the protection of personal data. Together, you will ensure that NWO remains privacy-compliant. Additionally, you will work closely with the Data Protection Officer (DPO), the Information Security Officer (ISO), and the privacy lawyers in the Legal Affairs department.

You and your colleague promote the importance of data protection and privacy laws within the organization, and you ensure that colleagues prioritize privacy when undertaking new projects, applications, and data processing activities. You also play a role in monitoring and improving the processes that make this possible.

Your work in practice:

  • You implement the privacy policy
  • You will serve as the point of contact for colleagues regarding privacy issues
  • You provide advice on privacy compliance
  • You will assist with conducting DPIA’s and following up on them
  • You actively contribute to the privacy awareness program, including by conducting training sessions
  • You share responsibility for the administrative obligations arising from the GDPR. Your duties include managing the record of processing activities and the data breach register. You will develop the procedures necessary to create and maintain these records
  • You take the lead in crisis situations involving privacy, such as data breaches.

What you bring

You have an analytical mind and an eye for the various interests within the organization. You carefully weigh these interests, and your solutions are the result of well-considered choices. You communicate effectively and clearly, and you’re good at putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. You are a good listener and use this to identify what is happening within the organization when it comes to privacy. You can explain privacy topics to everyone in the organization in a simple way. You enjoy presenting and have a natural talent for it: you know how to hold your audience’s attention and convey the message effectively.

You know how to win people over and bring them together, even (or especially!) when there are conflicting interests. You set a clear course and take decisive action to ensure it is followed.

You have:

  • an academic level of work and thinking, and preferably a background in the legal and/or technical aspects of privacy
  • substantive knowledge of and experience with the GDPR
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience, preferably at a larger organization.

And preferably also:

  • Experience in conducting and developing risk analyses, and knowledge of the methodologies used in risk analyses
  • an interest in IT security, information processes, and information security principles such as the BIO or ISO 27002
  • a CIPP/E and/or CIPP/M certification.

This is where you'll be working

The Legal Affairs Department currently consists of 14 lawyers, 1 privacy officer, and 4 colleagues in support roles.

The team advises the Board of Directors, the management team, and other employees within the organization on matters such as administrative law, grant law, WOO requests, PPPs and IP, state aid, procurement law, and privacy.

At NWO, we love teams with a good mix. In terms of age, background, ideas, and experience. The Legal Affairs department is home to seasoned professionals, young talents, and everyone in between. The more diverse the perspectives, the more valuable the team. NWO employees also have a lot in common: we are ambitious, driven by quality, and feel a strong connection to our work. We want to learn from each other and grow together in an open, collegial, and pleasant atmosphere. We work hard, but there’s also plenty of room for camaraderie and department and team activities. Job satisfaction and the personal development of our employees are important; we pay close attention to them, encouraging and facilitating them.

Here's what we offer you

A challenging and socially meaningful position within an enthusiastic team, offering excellent employment conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Research Institutions (Cao-OI (NL) - WVOI).

You will receive a one-year employment contract, which will be converted to a permanent position upon satisfactory performance. The salary depends on your knowledge and experience and ranges from €4,267 to €6,673 gross per month for full-time employment (scale 11/12, Collective Labor Agreement for Research Institutions). In addition, we offer you, among other things, 8% vacation pay, an end-of-year bonus of 8.33%, and a very generous leave policy. NWO is affiliated with the ABP for pension benefits, and we offer partially paid parental leave, a discount on supplemental health insurance, and extensive training opportunities. We operate on a hybrid model (partly in the office—in The Hague and Utrecht—and partly from home). You will receive a work-from-home allowance, an NS business card for public transportation, and we provide an NWO laptop and mobile phone.
