A strong and diverse media landscape is essential to the functioning of our democratic constitutional state. However, the provision of news and information is increasingly falling into the hands of global tech companies. This changing infrastructure calls for innovation and creativity from the media sector, but also for a fresh and robust approach to media policy in the Netherlands. The Democracy and Media Foundation is therefore seeking a Senior Media Policy Officer.
The Democracy and Media Foundation (SDM) was founded by the courageous individuals who launched the underground resistance newspaper*Het Parool*during World War II. This history instills in us a deep-rooted understanding that the democratic rule of law and a healthy, free press require constant attention and support. Together, they form the foundation of a free, just, and open society, in which the equality of all citizens is guaranteed.
The provision of news and information to citizens is increasingly falling into the hands of global tech companies that cannot be held accountable for the content they produce. An effective response to this requires innovation and creativity from the media sector, but also a fresh and robust approach to media policy in the Netherlands. SDM is committed to a strong and pluralistic media landscape that enables our democratic constitutional state to function effectively. In doing so, the foundation focuses in particular on protecting a solid media infrastructure, promoting a resilient, reflective media sector that continually reinvents itself, and facilitating innovative content that nourishes public discourse on the future of our liberal democracy.
As a shareholder with a mission-driven focus in DPG Media and De Correspondent, SDM safeguards the independence and diversity of journalistic media production. In addition, SDM organizes various (closed-door) meetings for journalists and media professionals, and stimulates public debate by actively bringing important developments to the forefront. Where necessary, SDM also intervenes directly or invests in initiatives that do so.
As a senior media policy officer, you will play a key role in shaping our vision and providing advice on the media (and its future) and how it contributes to an informed society. In addition, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with relevant organizations, including those that influence policy in The Hague and beyond. You will also contribute ideas on how SDM, as a pioneer among title foundations, can effectively oversee the independence and pluralism of DPG’s titles. Furthermore, you will actively contribute to meetings and research, for example by providing targeted input or by leading or contributing to projects in the field of (journalistic) media. You will report to the Executive Director.
