A strong and diverse media landscape is essential to the functioning of our democratic constitutional state. However, the provision of news and information is increasingly falling into the hands of global tech companies. This changing infrastructure calls for innovation and creativity from the media sector, but also for a fresh and robust approach to media policy in the Netherlands. The Democracy and Media Foundation is therefore seeking a Senior Media Policy Officer.

About SDM

The Democracy and Media Foundation (SDM) was founded by the courageous individuals who launched the underground resistance newspaper*Het Parool*during World War II. This history instills in us a deep-rooted understanding that the democratic rule of law and a healthy, free press require constant attention and support. Together, they form the foundation of a free, just, and open society, in which the equality of all citizens is guaranteed.

The provision of news and information to citizens is increasingly falling into the hands of global tech companies that cannot be held accountable for the content they produce. An effective response to this requires innovation and creativity from the media sector, but also a fresh and robust approach to media policy in the Netherlands. SDM is committed to a strong and pluralistic media landscape that enables our democratic constitutional state to function effectively. In doing so, the foundation focuses in particular on protecting a solid media infrastructure, promoting a resilient, reflective media sector that continually reinvents itself, and facilitating innovative content that nourishes public discourse on the future of our liberal democracy.

As a shareholder with a mission-driven focus in DPG Media and De Correspondent, SDM safeguards the independence and diversity of journalistic media production. In addition, SDM organizes various (closed-door) meetings for journalists and media professionals, and stimulates public debate by actively bringing important developments to the forefront. Where necessary, SDM also intervenes directly or invests in initiatives that do so.

About the role

As a senior media policy officer, you will play a key role in shaping our vision and providing advice on the media (and its future) and how it contributes to an informed society. In addition, you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with relevant organizations, including those that influence policy in The Hague and beyond. You will also contribute ideas on how SDM, as a pioneer among title foundations, can effectively oversee the independence and pluralism of DPG’s titles. Furthermore, you will actively contribute to meetings and research, for example by providing targeted input or by leading or contributing to projects in the field of (journalistic) media. You will report to the Executive Director.

Main Activities

  • Policy Development: Responsible for analyzing policies aimed at promoting and protecting a diverse and independent media sector. Drafting position papers, recommendations, and policy briefs based on academic insights but always grounded in reality.
  • Advice: Providing guidance on developments in the media, with a particular focus on their impact on the reach, accessibility, and relevance of journalistic content for a broad audience and, consequently, on public discourse. Identifying trends and risks in a timely manner and translating them into concrete, actionable (policy) recommendations.
  • Oversight: contributing ideas regarding the oversight of the independence and diversity of DPG and De Correspondent’s publications.
  • Policy advocacy and stakeholder management: contributing to the further development of a relevant network and strengthening SDM’s position and reputation within government, academia, the media, and civil society. Forging coalitions and maintaining networks to achieve common goals, with a focus on shared interests and strategic collaboration.
  • Communication: helping to translate complex topics into clear messages for diverse audiences.
  • Project Management: Initiating and contributing to new projects, with responsibility for coordinating stakeholders, monitoring progress and quality, and achieving the intended results within agreed parameters.

Qualifications

  • Academic level of thinking and work, preferably in media, communication studies, or a related field.
  • At least ten years of relevant work experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of policy development, research, or consulting in the field of (journalistic) media. Preferably combined with experience in policy advocacy or consulting for government agencies, regulatory bodies, or civil society organizations.
  • Knowledge of current developments in the fields of journalism, media, and technology.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and engage others.
  • An interest in journalism, media, democracy, and the rule of law.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the interrelationships within the media landscape and a broad, versatile network.
  • Excellent command of Dutch and English.

Skills

  • Results-oriented and a strong communicator. Ability to switch between scientific depth and practical application.
  • Analytical, meticulous, and able to identify trends and share insights at various levels.
  • Hands-on and self-reliant, yet effective when working in a team and with various stakeholders.
  • Contributes to an open, flexible work environment.
  • Maintain an overview and ensure that processes involving multiple parties run smoothly.

What we offer

  • A position of 32–40 hours per week (0.8–1.0 FTE) with a one-year employment contract, with the intention of extending it based on satisfactory performance.
  • 8% vacation pay, a travel allowance, a pension plan, and excellent training and development opportunities.
  • A laptop and reimbursement of phone expenses.
  • A workspace in the heart of Amsterdam.
  • A salary between €5,500 and €7,000 based on a 40-hour workweek. Salary will be determined based on experience.
