The Sickle Cell Foundation is a young and ambitious organization. We were founded in 2017 with the goal of facilitating scientific research into sickle cell disease. Our ultimate goal is to improve the treatment of sickle cell disease and make a cure accessible to all patients. This requires both funding and public awareness.
Because sickle cell disease is too painful to ignore. Yet many people are not even aware of the existence of this serious disease, even though around 300,000 children are born with sickle cell disease worldwide every year. The Sickle Cell Foundation is committed to changing that and raising awareness about sickle cell disease. To this end, we organize events such as the Be Amazed benefit dinner and World Sickle Cell Day. We also bring together people who can help raise awareness of sickle cell disease. For example, we were involved in the production of several documentaries about sickle cell disease.
Research is essential to achieving the ultimate goal: improving the treatment and cure of sickle cell disease. The Sickle Cell Fund provides grants for groundbreaking scientific research into this hereditary and painful blood disorder.
One of our key activities is raising targeted funds to support research into sickle cell disease. This includes research into better treatment methods, the impact of the disease on quality of life, and the implementation of stem cell transplants and, in the future, gene therapy for all patients.
To further achieve our goals, we are looking for an independent and enthusiastic new colleague to join our team!
with a focus on companies and private equity funds
You will have overall responsibility for fundraising, developing and updating the multi-year fundraising plan, and increasing the foundation’s visibility. You will work closely with the operational board. This is a new position within the foundation, which means there is plenty of room to shape the direction of fundraising and apply your creativity. The board is available for consultation, brainstorming, and exchanging ideas. You will therefore have frequent meetings scheduled.
If the organization continues to grow successfully, the Sickle Cell Fund will expand further. In that case, advancement to the position of director is a possibility.
• You will develop new fundraising strategies, create a corresponding multi-year plan, and oversee its implementation;
• You will engage with potential donors and, with integrity and persuasiveness, inspire them to say “yes” to the proposals you present to them;
• You write persuasive copy and are creative in identifying new funding opportunities;
• You draft applications for endowment funds and know who to submit them to.
• You have previous experience as a relationship manager or fundraiser, or you’re interested in expanding your knowledge and network in this new role and helping to build up this young foundation;
• You are an experienced account manager and a skilled networker with a hands-on approach. Experience in the nonprofit sector is not required, but it is a plus;
• You have the tenacity to keep going, even when you regularly face rejection while fundraising due to the disease’s relative obscurity. You’re not afraid of rejection, but you consistently manage to create new opportunities;
• You excel at communicating with donors, board members, and researchers, and are creative in writing compelling copy;
• You have an independent work ethic, are driven, and think outside the box;
• You have an interest in, or a willingness to learn about, the issues surrounding sickle cell disease and the foundation’s target audience.
• A challenging and meaningful role within a small, ambitious organization;
• A great deal of responsibility and room for initiative;
• Collaboration with a committed and hands-on board;
• Flexible working hours and the option to work remotely: both from home and the option to work regularly at a fixed office location in Amsterdam North
• The salary depends on your knowledge and experience and ranges from €3,900 to €5,200 per month for full-time employment;
• A laptop and cell phone (or reimbursement);
• Benefits such as travel allowance and pension contributions.
