About Down to Earth
Down to Earth is a journalistic magazine focused on climate change and the climate movement. The magazine is published by Milieudefensie, but is produced by an independent editorial team. We feature in-depth analysis and opinion pieces, interviews, and columns. We create substantive stories that resonate with and inspire people, while leaving room for critical perspectives. Through independent journalism, the magazine aims to inform, inspire, and foster discussion, thereby contributing to Milieudefensie’s objectives. We publish a bimonthly print edition with a circulation of over 42,000. In addition, we publish articles several times a week on our website and social media channels.
About the client
Milieudefensie has been working toward a sustainable and just world for 50 years. In the Netherlands, nearly 200,000 change-makers actively contribute to our campaigns. More than 100,000 members and donors make our campaigns financially possible. We fight for climate justice: ensuring that major polluters also contribute to solving the climate crisis and that they comply with climate, environmental, and human rights regulations worldwide. We are considered the most influential climate and environmental organization in the Netherlands. From our headquarters, more than 100 professionals contribute to this effort every day.
Who do you work with?
You will work closely with the editor-in-chief and the (online) communications team. You will also collaborate with a large group of freelance or volunteer journalists, photographers, and illustrators.
What will you be doing?
- Searching for unexpected combinations of perspective, subject matter, text type, and other elements that make a story compelling;
- Content creation, editing, and final editing;
- collaborating with and supervising photographers, journalists, designers, and editorial volunteers;
- help brainstorm how (the content of) Down to Earth can contribute to Milieudefensie’s goals;
- standing in for the editor-in-chief in his or her absence;
- help shape and develop the content and direction of the magazine and the website.
What are you bringing?
- You enjoy working independently, while always keeping the lines of communication open with your colleagues.
- You are meticulous and know how to keep track of things amid the daily chaos of many small tasks.
- You have a background in journalism.
- You have at least 2 years of work experience as an editor for a print magazine or a similar publication. Experience writing for diverse audiences is a plus.
- You have a knack for online publishing and writing for social media.
- You can work under deadlines and handle stress well.
What we offer
- A one-year employment contract with the option to extend.
- Depending on your knowledge and experience, the salary ranges from €2,876 to €3,865 for a full-time position (37.5 hours).
