Giving meaning to art and history. As an Exhibitions Project Manager at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, that’s what you’ll be contributing to. Working alongside various project teams, you’ll spend a year developing a range of exhibitions. In this way, you’ll make our museum’s stories accessible to a broad, modern, and national and international audience.
World-class exhibitions
Every exhibition consists of many different elements. These include art, history, objects and their associated stories, the exhibition design, and visitor communication. Each of these elements is fascinating in its own right, and you bring them together to create a world-class exhibition. As a project manager, you’ll work on multiple exhibitions simultaneously, each at a different stage. For one exhibition, you might still be working on the project proposal or plan, while another is almost ready to open to the public. You’ll maintain an overview of all these projects and see each one through to a successful conclusion. Your work will include:
- Leading project teams for multiple exhibitions.
- Monitoring the schedule, process, budget, and quality of these exhibitions.
- Ensuring sound decision-making.
- Convincing colleagues and other stakeholders of the project plans.
- Monitoring current exhibitions and implementing adjustments and improvements as needed.
- Maintaining project records.
- Evaluating and archiving past exhibitions.
Working at the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum belongs to and is for everyone. As an Exhibitions Project Manager, you’ll be at the heart of the organization. There’s hardly a department you won’t be working with—from curators to communications specialists, and from construction workers on the floor to security staff. Everywhere you go, you’ll connect with the right people to make the project a success together. And it doesn’t stop there. Outside our museum, you’ll also work closely with various stakeholders, such as designers.
You’ll be part of the Exhibitions department—a close-knit group of like-minded people where everyone can be themselves. This team is responsible for all the exhibitions produced by the Rijksmuseum, ranging from the permanent collection with small rotating displays to major exhibition projects in the Philips Wing.
What do you bring to the table?
We’re curious to learn more about who you are, where you’re from, and what talents you’ll bring to our team. One thing’s for sure: you know exactly how to get things done. To do this, you bring the right people together and get them on board with your ideas. Persuasiveness and a knack for diplomacy are essential in this regard. You’re also a decisive person who takes swift action when the situation calls for it. Additionally:
- You have at least a college-level work and thinking ability.
- Do you have at least 5 years of experience leading medium- to large-scale exhibition projects in museums?
- Do you speak and write Dutch and English well?
What do you get in return?
- A gross monthly salary of €3,801 to €5,075 per month based on a 36-hour workweek (scale 11 of the museum collective bargaining agreement).
- A one-year temporary contract.
- Full reimbursement of public transportation costs for trips of 5 km or more (up to a maximum of €345). The costs you incur when you park your bike in a secure bike rack at the station are also fully reimbursed.
- 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
- After your probationary period, you will receive a Museum Year Card that grants you unlimited access to 450 museums in the Netherlands. You are always welcome at the Rijksmuseum (during opening hours) with one guest.
