For nearly 40 years, Amsterdam Sinfonietta has been the leading string orchestra in the Netherlands. The orchestra consists of 23 passionate musicians and is led by violinist Candida Thompson. It is known for its adventurous programs, sometimes purely classical with top national and international soloists, but increasingly often the concerts are a combination of classical music and dance, theater, film, or literature, or collaborations with pop artists and non-Western musicians.
The team behind the scenes is based at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam and consists of eleven staff members supported by a network of freelancers. With this team, we stage approximately ten productions each year, which we take on tour both domestically and internationally. A number of concerts can be viewed online via our own streaming platform.
As Production Manager at Amsterdam Sinfonietta, you will translate ambitious artistic plans into practical production tasks. In this wide-ranging role, you will be responsible for all aspects of production work: preparations, all production activities during a tour, and the (financial) wrap-up. You will form a team with the Head of Production, within which you will have a great deal of autonomy and work independently on productions. You will also collaborate closely with the Manager of Artistic Affairs and the Artistic Director during productions.
You create the conditions that allow musicians and soloists to perform at their best and ensure that the behind-the-scenes crew knows exactly what to do. Not only do you organize everything flawlessly, but your presence also contributes to the professional and welcoming atmosphere in which the orchestra thrives. You interact with people with confidence and empathy. When necessary, you have a frank conversation with a key member of the production team.
Some of the preparatory tasks include drawing up stage layouts, booking rehearsal spaces, arranging catering, organizing travel and accommodations for musicians and soloists, coordinating lighting plans and any sound reinforcement, developing and communicating tour schedules to musicians and soloists, and drafting contracts for musicians. Once on location, you unload the van, set up the stage, direct the technicians, follow up on arrangements with the venue, and assist the musicians from arrival to departure.
The production manager oversees approximately 80% of the productions. You will be present for all activities during a production. As a result, the workload during a production is full-time. Outside of projects, you’ll work about three days a week with your colleagues in the office, or partly from home—this is negotiable. For the upcoming season, concerts are planned in Germany, Italy, and South America, among other places. Due to the combinations of classical music with dance, theater, music videos, or pop artists, each production has its own unique production challenges.
We value diversity and believe that a diverse range of talents helps us achieve our vision and strategy of effectively reaching our diverse target audiences. We take this into account during the selection process.
We are offering a versatile position (0.8 FTE) in an inspiring and informal work environment where you will collaborate with a close-knit and motivated team. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Music Ensembles (scale 6), based on a 38-hour workweek. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of a permanent position.
