Teylers Museum is the oldest museum in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1784 and is still housed in its original building. At the museum, you can marvel at art and science. It houses a unique collection of fossils, minerals, books, coins, medals, scientific instruments, paintings, and drawings of international significance. The history of the museum itself is also on display in the old halls and Pieter Teyler’s House. We organize diverse and successful (international) exhibitions, ranging from Dinomakers to Michelangelo’s Men and The Great Illusion – 200 Years of Virtual Realities.
Who is looking for Teylers?
Teylers Museum is looking for you, a freelance museum educator with a broad interest in the museum, history, and collections in the fields of science and art. You will carry out assignments on a project basis, creating connections between students (and their world) and the museum through educational programs. In doing so, you can draw on your own expertise, background, or professional knowledge—such as a particular talent, experience as a teacher, or experience with creative ways to engage students in your story.
The assignment
As a freelance museum educator, you will be responsible for delivering and facilitating educational programs. You may also be asked to lead activities for other target groups, such as adults and families. Together with security guards, visitor services staff, colleagues from the Public Affairs department, and an enthusiastic team of freelance tour guides, you will ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and unforgettable experience at the museum.
Scope of the assignment
You will carry out assignments in collaboration with the Public Affairs Department at Teylers Museum. Within the scope of the assignment, your main responsibilities will include:
- You will lead educational activities for school classes of all ages and various skill levels
- You facilitate a positive exchange of knowledge through thought-provoking questions, inspiring stories, innovative teaching methods, and guiding participants through engaging activities
- You will engage with students and ensure that they can form a personal connection with the topics covered in the museum
- You are able to offer customized solutions and, upon request, supplement the educational programs with personal stories and ideas
- You are willing to use your own time to broaden and deepen your knowledge of the topics covered in (temporary) exhibitions, as well as teaching strategies and methods, in order to perform your duties even more effectively. Teylers Museum is willing to provide support in this regard at your initiative
Profile
- You can connect with students and/or visitors through the stories, artifacts, and current themes that Teylers Museum has to offer
- You are curious and interested in the students/visitors you are guiding
- You are creative and flexible, which allows you to adapt your presentation to changing circumstances at the museum and to the audience in front of you
- You love telling stories in an interactive way, and you’re inspired to observe, think, and take action
- You are professional, customer-oriented, and have integrity
- You have relevant experience and/or talent, for example as a tour guide, (museum) educator, or actor
- You are available for at least two half-days per week on average and are flexible. This does not guarantee assignments, as this depends in part on requests from schools. You decide at all times which assignments you accept
- You live in Haarlem or the surrounding area
What do we offer you?
- Assignments as a freelance tour guide under a framework agreement
- The opportunity to develop yourself on a voluntary basis through, for example, courses and inspirational sessions
- Free admission for you and your immediate family at Teylers Museum
- A fee of €55.00 (excluding VAT) per hour for carrying out assignments and €35.00 per hour for, among other things, substantive meetings in which, for example, new educational programs are explained
- A travel allowance of up to €15 per day
We believe in a diverse and inclusive organization

We strongly encourage anyone who can contribute to this mission to get in touch. We are convinced that a more diverse organization will enable us to better engage our current and future visitors with our story.
