We are committed to ensuring that our port and surrounding area are safe, healthy, and attractive. We achieve this by operating in a socially responsible manner, creating economic and social value, and fostering sustainable growth.

Does the Port of Rotterdam inspire you? Are you an expert on environmental issues and permits, and would you like to work in a passionate department dedicated to the port’s development? We’d love to meet you!

Department Information

The Permits & Advice department where you will be working is part of the Environmental Management department. It’s a team full of enthusiastic and dedicated professionals, such as Boukje, Maaike, and Gert-Jan. The Environmental Management department exists within the Port Authority to maintain and improve the balance between the port, the surrounding area, and our customers. Within Environmental Management, we address issues related to CO2, nitrogen, noise, land use planning, environmental safety, nature, soil, and accessibility.

Your future department, Permits & Advice, consists of (integrated) environmental consultants and specialists in various environmental topics such as sustainability, soil, explosive remnants of war, noise, nitrogen, environmental safety, and nature. The culture within the department is characterized by mutual connection and a passion for the profession. In addition to Boukje, Maaike, and Gert-Jan, your team includes over 15 other dedicated colleagues.

You’ll be joining a close-knit, hard-working team. Colleagues support one another both professionally and personally. You’ll collaborate frequently, but you’ll also regularly head out together to inspiring locations to brainstorm ideas and unwind. Hybrid work is allowed, but we also enjoy being together in the office on a regular basis.

What will you be doing?

As an Environmental Advisor at the Port of Rotterdam Authority, you’ll be working in a dynamic environment where we’re working hard to drive the energy transition and sustainability. You’ll be right in the thick of things where “it all happens.”

As an Environmental Advisor, you’ll be part of project teams responsible for providing advice on environmental and spatial planning matters. You’ll coordinate this advice with the specialists who are also part of your team.

In addition, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Conducting the necessary environmental studies (or having them conducted).
  • The necessary permits, administrative approvals, and zoning procedures for the projects; you ensure that the HbR complies with environmental and zoning laws and regulations.

We believe it is important for you to ensure that various environmental issues are addressed in private-law agreements with our clients. You will also advise our clients on environmental and land-use procedures. In doing so, you will contribute to the “ease of doing business” in the port.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

  • You have strong professional expertise and a passion for the environment.
  • You are aware of the relevant developments in your field.
  • You enjoy working with colleagues, clients, consulting firms, and local government agencies, and you connect with people easily.
  • You and those around you describe you as a proactive, pragmatic, and solution-oriented colleague.
  • You have strong communication skills, both verbal and written. You’re a master at persuasion and convey advice to colleagues clearly and concisely.
  • You are well-organized and take responsibility for the content of your advice.
  • You are also results-oriented.
  • You must have at least a bachelor's degree (e.g., in Environmental Science).
  • In addition, you have at least 5 years of relevant work experience, preferably at a consulting firm specializing in integrated environmental consulting.

What do we offer you?

In addition to the opportunity to help shape the future of the Port of Rotterdam, we offer:

  • The starting salary depends on your education and experience and is up to €4,066 gross per month (with the possibility of advancing to the top of the pay scale, €6,046, through the annual performance review).
  • 36-hour workweek;
  • A one-year contract with the possibility of a permanent position;
  • A good pension plan through the ABP (average-salary scheme, under which we cover approximately 70% of the premium);
  • Travel expense reimbursement;
  • A personal discretionary budget of 19.6% on top of your gross monthly salary (comprising a vacation allowance (8%), a thirteenth-month bonus (8.33%), a wellness allowance (2.3%), and an additional budget of (0.97%). You can have this accumulated budget paid out (in part) during the year and/or use it to purchase a bicycle, make additional pension contributions to the ABP, buy extra leave hours, or offset training costs (not job-related) or career counseling in a tax-efficient manner.
  • A good pension plan through ABP (an average-earnings-based system, under which we cover approximately 70% of the premium).
  • A modern workspace with a fantastic view of your work area and the city of Rotterdam!
  • We help you stay healthy by offering discounts on your gym membership and providing fruit in the workplace, among other things.
  • A wide range of training and development opportunities to help you grow. You’re smart; together, we’re even smarter.
