As a professional, do you recognize the need to ensure that all medical (SRG) matters for this program run smoothly, and do you find fulfillment in supporting migrants and others who lack access to medical care? If so, read on!
Everyone has the right to healthcare. Yet access to healthcare is not a given for everyone. Not even in the Netherlands. Doctors of the World is committed to helping people who have nowhere else to turn for medical care. We translate testimonials from our programs into an activist agenda for change. Doctors of the World is part of the international medical network Médecins du Monde and operates in more than 70 countries in addition to the Netherlands. Our organization is driven by dedicated volunteers, professionals, and members. In the Netherlands, we have a team of 50 paid staff members and over 280 volunteers.
Under the law, everyone has the right to access medically necessary care. In practice, however, it is clear that many people in the Netherlands do not receive the sexual and reproductive health care they need. This leads to unwanted pregnancies, as well as an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are also more likely to experience sexual and gender-based violence. Furthermore, they are excluded from essential population screening programs.
Through the SRG program, DvdW focuses on identifying and promoting access to mainstream medical care for this target group, increasing awareness, and facilitating communication between patients and healthcare providers. We do this, among other things, through our weekly SRG consultation hours in Amsterdam, where people can consult with our volunteer doctors.
In addition, we travel around the country offering consultation hours via our SRG mobile clinic and organize themed meetings in collaboration with various partners, such as the GGD and migrant organizations, with the aim of increasing knowledge and self-reliance.
We are also actively working to improve access to abortion care in the Netherlands for marginalized groups.
