Job Description

The staff of the Research Bureau (WB) play an indispensable role in the work of the Supreme Court and the associated Office of the Prosecutor, which advises the Supreme Court. Approximately 270 colleagues work at the Supreme Court. The work environment is informal and supportive, with a focus on social activities and personal development.

As an employee of the WB:

• Write your draft opinions or rulings
  
• Will you also conduct the necessary legal research?
  
• Do you discuss the documents you have drafted with the Advocate General or the judge with whom you work?
  
• Do you often work independently, but also as part of a team of talented colleagues with diverse professional backgrounds?

In this role, you will be closely involved in the development of opinions or rulings on important legal issues brought before the Supreme Court, working at the intersection of academia and practice.  

In addition, at the WB, you’ll be part of a group of about a hundred lawyers working in the civil, criminal, or tax sectors.

Job Requirements

• You have a master’s degree in law (Dutch law, tax law, or notarial law)
  
• With a master’s degree in tax economics from a Dutch university, you can also apply for jobs in the tax sector
  
• You have several years of relevant work experience
  
• These publications are recommended
  
• You have strong analytical skills and excellent writing skills
  
• You can work both independently and as part of a team
  

The Supreme Court is interested in candidates with experience in legal practice (for example, in the legal profession, the judiciary, tax consulting, or the business sector), as well as candidates with other backgrounds, such as those in legal scholarship. Legal professionals with broad experience, as well as those with more specialized expertise, are invited to apply. 

Details

WB employees typically take the next step in their careers after five to six years, often moving into roles such as judge, university professor or lecturer, attorney, tax advisor, legislative counsel, policy officer, or public prosecutor. To facilitate these career moves, the Supreme Court encourages WB staff to broaden and deepen their knowledge both personally and professionally. For example, in consultation, there is the option to take courses, publish, pursue a Ph.D., serve as a substitute judge, or engage in other internal or external side activities during employment. The basic principle is that you will work for a period with the Council and a period with the Public Prosecutor’s Office. It is possible, in consultation, to work from home for part of the week.

Employment Terms and Conditions and Compensation 

You will start with a temporary contract, which may lead to a permanent position if your performance is satisfactory. Your salary will be determined based on your years of work experience in accordance with the CAO Rijk, initially at scale 11. Scale 11 has a maximum of €6,110.94 gross per month for a 36-hour workweek, excluding the 16.5% Individual Choice Budget (IKB). After one year of working at the Supreme Court in the position of research office staff member and with 6 years of relevant legal work experience, the salary will be set according to scale 12, provided your performance is satisfactory. Scale 12 has a maximum of €6,907.67 gross per month, excluding the 16.5% IKB. The Supreme Court offers excellent fringe benefits, such as paid parental leave, a transportation plan, and the option to customize part of your employment conditions using your IKB.
