Would you like to help draft an Advocate General’s Opinion or a Supreme Court ruling? If so, the position of research assistant might be right for you.
This is a high-level position in tax law. The staff of the tax section of the Research Bureau support the justices of the Tax Chamber of the Supreme Court and the attorneys general of the tax section of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The core of the work involves (i) advising on the selection of cases for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to file briefs, (ii) drafting briefs for the Public Prosecutor’s Office or draft judgments for the Court, and (iii) conducting the necessary legal research. In doing so, you will deepen and broaden your knowledge of tax law, procedural law, general legal principles, and international and EU law. Additional (internal) responsibilities are also part of your role.
You will discuss your cases, opinions, and drafts with the Advocate General or Justice for whom you work, as well as with your colleagues. In this way, you will be closely involved in the drafting of opinions or judgments on the various important legal issues brought before the Supreme Court. The basic principle is that, during your employment at the Research Bureau, you will spend approximately equal amounts of time working for the Public Prosecutor’s Office and for the Tax Chamber of the Supreme Court.
The tax section of the Research Bureau has over twenty staff members. The entire bureau, including your civil and criminal law colleagues, has approximately one hundred staff members. You will always work alongside a team of talented colleagues with an interest in (tax) law and diverse professional backgrounds. This makes the Research Bureau an inspiring work environment rich in legal substance. An informal and engaged atmosphere prevails throughout the entire organization.
You hold a master’s degree from a Dutch university, preferably in tax law or tax economics, and possess in-depth knowledge of, insight into, and experience with tax law in the broadest sense, as well as a keen interest in the field. You have strong analytical skills, excellent written communication skills, and the ability to work independently. The Supreme Court is interested in both applicants with relevant practical experience—such as as a lawyer (including a trainee), tax advisor, legal officer at a district court or court of appeals, or staff member at a ministry or the tax authority—and candidates with an academic background. Publicationsare a plus.
After five to six years, staff members of the Research Bureau take the next step in their careers, often moving into positions such as judge, university lecturer or professor, attorney, tax advisor, legislative counsel, policy officer, or tax inspector. For this reason, new job openings arise regularly—as is the case now. To help departing staff members take the next steps they desire, the Supreme Court encourages employees to develop both personally and professionally. For example, employees have the opportunity to take courses, publish, conduct doctoral research, serve as a substitute judge, or engage in other ancillary activities during their tenure.
You will start with a temporary employment contract, which, subject to satisfactory performance, offers the prospect of a permanent employment contract. Salary is in accordance with the Central Government Collective Labor Agreement (CAO Rijk), generally based on pay scale 11. Your placement within this scale depends on the number of years of work experience. Scale 11 has a maximum of €5,586.12 gross per month for a 36-hour workweek. This excludes the 16.37% Individual Choice Budget (IKB). With 6 years of relevant legal work experience, including at least one year at the Supreme Court, and satisfactory performance, promotion to scale 12 may follow, with a maximum of €6,320.43 gross per month, again excluding the 16.37% IKB. The Supreme Court offers excellent benefits, such as paid parental leave, a transportation plan, and the opportunity to customize part of your employment conditions using your IKB.
