As a member of the Professional Development team, you actively contribute to the professional development of our firefighting colleagues. You serve as the point of contact for colleagues at the fire stations and in the specialized units assigned to you, and you are physically present at scheduled times. This may also include evenings, weekends, and occasionally overnight shifts for specific drills.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
You are an enthusiastic and hands-on professional who gets along well with others and is committed to achieving results. You collaborate effectively with colleagues on the “Staying Competent” team and, together with them, make a tangible contribution to maintaining professional competence. You enjoy designing practice programs, leading or delivering exercises and training sessions, and organizing practice activities. In addition, you enjoy helping colleagues improve in their work and develop their attitude and behavior.
You work professionally, have a positive attitude, and excel at creative thinking. You have experience training and mentoring people within the fire department. You also know how to create a learning environment where everyone can grow and feel safe. If you already have experience in an active firefighting role, that’s a plus.

Our Professional Competence Department consists of approximately 50 professionals and ensures that all active-duty firefighting personnel maintain a high level of professional competence in terms of knowledge, skills, and behavior. We play a leading role in fostering professional excellence, from firefighters to the duty commander.
The department consists of three teams: Learning and Development, Maintaining Professional Competence, and Developing Professional Competence (which includes the Amsterdam-Amstelland, Uithoorn, and Schiphol Fire Department Education, Training, and Drill Center—BOCAS). Your position is within the Maintaining Professional Competence team.
