Fire Department Professional Competency Officer

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Professional Development team, you actively contribute to the professional development of our firefighting colleagues. You serve as the point of contact for colleagues at the fire stations and in the specialized units assigned to you, and you are physically present at scheduled times. This may also include evenings, weekends, and occasionally overnight shifts for specific drills.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

• Provide support for all training-related activities at the barracks in the role of a “skills broker.”
• Together with the commanders and fire station instructors, you will be responsible for planning drills and training sessions at all our fire stations, both professional and volunteer. You will help develop drill plans tailored to each fire station based on their specific needs, the standards associated with roles and responsibilities, findings from incident evaluations, and regional and national developments
• You take the initiative and play a proactive role in identifying areas for improvement, supporting and coaching your stations to continue developing their professional skills in a positive and educational manner.
• You will work with station instructors and drill leaders to prepare and supervise drills and training sessions, both for basic firefighting operations and for specialized units and operations.
• You will assist with the preparation and help conduct drills for our on-call team.

You enjoy designing practice programs, leading or delivering exercises and training sessions, and organizing practice activities. In addition, you enjoy helping colleagues improve in their work and develop their attitude and behavior.

You work professionally, have a positive attitude, and excel at creative thinking. You have experience training and mentoring people within the fire department. You also know how to create a learning environment where everyone can grow and feel safe. If you already have experience in an active firefighting role, that’s a plus.

• You have a high school diploma or equivalent;
• You have strong communication skills and aren’t afraid to strike up conversations and approach others;

• You enjoy actively connecting with colleagues in the emergency response team (both volunteer and professional) and know how to help them improve their professional skills.
• Working from home isn't for you, but being physically present at the barracks is;
• You identify areas for improvement and proactively contribute ideas for improvements;
• You serve as a role model and help foster a safe learning environment and ensure that established guidelines are followed.

• Salary in pay grade 8 ranging from €3,010 to €4,302 per month based on a 36-hour workweek
• A job for 32–36 hours a week
• An individual flexible spending account (IFSA) equal to 18.63% of the gross annual salary. This includes the year-end bonus and vacation pay
• 187.2 hours of leave based on a 36-hour workweek, of which 43.2 are overtime hours. May 1 and May 5 are fixed days off (10.3 hours); these are included in this total.
• A one-year appointment, with the possibility of a permanent position
• A generous pension plan through ABP, 70% of which is paid by us
• The option to work remotely with a work-from-home allowance of €3 per day

The department

Our Professional Competence Department consists of approximately 50 professionals and ensures that all active-duty firefighting personnel maintain a high level of professional competence in terms of knowledge, skills, and behavior. We play a leading role in fostering professional excellence, from firefighters to the duty commander.

The department consists of three teams: Learning and Development, Maintaining Professional Competence, and Developing Professional Competence (which includes the Amsterdam-Amstelland, Uithoorn, and Schiphol Fire Department Education, Training, and Drill Center—BOCAS). Your position is within the Maintaining Professional Competence team.
