Legal & Contracts Specialist

We are currently seeking an experienced professional for our Legal & Contracts department

Legal & Contracts Associate, 32 hours (fewer hours negotiable)

The position

As a Rights & Contracts Specialist, you will support the editorial team in matters related to rights and contracts. You will draft contractual agreements with authors, illustrators, photographers, photo stock agencies, translators, and others, and manage, administer, advise on, and review these agreements in accordance with the publisher’s policies. You will provide advice on legal aspects related to intellectual property, potentially in consultation with external experts.

Within the Legal & Contracts department, you will focus on digital rights and related communications. You will also initiate and coordinate grant applications and serve as the point of contact for these matters.

Duties and responsibilities include:

• Drafting and (partially) negotiating contracts with rights holders
• Arranging additional rights for secondary exploitation, such as subscription models for digital products and/or audio products
  • Maintain contact with (international) rights holders regarding opportunities for re-exploitation
  • Arranging addenda for the purpose of re-exploitation
  • Establishing rights for re-use
• Derivative rights, such as film, stage, and television rights, and international derivative rights
  • Negotiating, selling, and managing ancillary rights, as well as handling the contractual aspects thereof
  • Maintaining contact with sub-agents for ancillary rights
• Initiating, managing, and coordinating grant applications and serving as the point of contact in this area
• Keeping abreast of developments in the legal market and the legal implications of developments in the digital market and other forms of distribution
• Initiating and finalizing the sale of rights and evaluating financial proposals for rights holders
• Entering contracts into our ERP system (Navision)
• Other common tasks within the Legal & Contracts Department

Profile and skills:

• College or university level of work and thinking
• Experience in a similar position
• Thorough knowledge of copyright, image rights, and intellectual property, with a specialization in digital rights
• An affinity for books/the book industry
• Knowledge of and interest in new forms of exploitation and/or formats
• Proficiency in Dutch and English
• You are able to work proactively, both independently and as part of a team, and possess the following skills: teamwork – results-oriented – dedication – commitment to quality – customer focus – accuracy – written communication – initiative – integrity
