The Gerrit Rietveld Academy is seeking a Human Resources and Payroll Administrator for its HR department, working 24–32 hours per week.


The Gerrit Rietveld Academie (GRA) is a small-scale, independent, internationally oriented college of fine arts and design comprising the Rietveld Academie (bachelor’s programs) and the Sandberg Institute (master’s programs). This is divided into 13 bachelor’s departments at the Rietveld, 7 master’s departments at the Sandberg, the Art and Public Space Research Group, and 23 studios. The academy has approximately 850 students and 130 course participants. The students come from 55 different countries, and 67% of the students are international.

The academy is characterized by an inquiry-based and experimental approach to art education, in which professors, lecturers, workshop staff, students, and administrative staff work together to shape the content and structure of education and research. Diversity and inclusion, ecology, and sustainability are key priorities for the GRA and thus serve as guiding principles for the actions of the members of the academy community. A defining feature of the academy is its decentralized management philosophy and the relative autonomy of its departments.

Day-to-day management is the responsibility of the Executive Board, which reports to the Supervisory Board. Academic programs are supported by a large number of departments and administrative units, such as Finance, Student Affairs, IT, Facilities, Public Rietveld, and Human Resources.

Our HR Department
Our HR Department consists of an HR Manager, an HR and Payroll Advisor, an HR and Payroll Administrator, an intern, and an HR Consultant. We work part-time and stay in close contact with one another through regular (digital) meetings.

We handle payroll in-house and are looking for a colleague to work with us on further leveraging the HR2day system. We are an open and approachable department and place great value on strong collaboration, both within our team and with our other colleagues. There is plenty of room for initiative, and ultimately, you will be jointly responsible for optimizing the configuration of HR2day. There are also opportunities for advancement to the position of HR and Payroll Advisor in the long term, provided you demonstrate the necessary qualifications.

This is a newly created position, established to ensure that there is always someone available with the right knowledge and experience. We hope to work with you to take further steps toward professionalizing and digitizing various processes, as well as improving efficiency within these processes. From August through February, your direct colleague will be on maternity leave, but after that, you will be working closely with her.

What will your responsibilities include?

  • Collecting, entering, and verifying various personnel and payroll changes;
  • keeping personnel files up to date and archiving them;
  • create contracts and addenda through the HR system and ensure they are signed and distributed, either as hard copies or through the HR system;
  • handling correspondence;
  • answering standard questions about payment processing;
  • refer questions regarding labor law to the HR advisor or the head of HR;
  • provide administrative support for recruitment and selection processes;
  • keeping the forms and processes currently used by HR up to date, in consultation with the HR manager;
  • preparing and providing personnel management information and reports if these are not (yet) available through the HR system;
  • initiating, implementing, and overseeing procedures and specific regulations related to (long-term) sick leave;
  • issuing employer statements for housing associations and banks, for example;
  • informing employees and managers about existing and/or upcoming regulations and advising them on benefits and resources.

What kind of profile do you have?

  • Several years of relevant work experience as a staff member in a human resources department (preferably at an educational institution) and/or the ability to learn quickly;
  • a practical understanding of how to handle HR matters and how to apply this knowledge to payroll administration;
  • holds a PDL (Practical Diploma in Payroll Administration), or is willing to obtain this diploma;
  • proficiency with automated (HR and payroll) systems, preferably: HR2day (and possibly AFAS/ADP/Raet/Centric);
  • administrative acumen;
  • accuracy;
  • planning skills;
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Dutch and English.

Terms of Employment

  • Under the Higher Vocational Education Collective Bargaining Agreement, the position is classified in pay grade 6, which has a maximum gross monthly salary of €2,847.69 (as of June 1: a maximum of €2,961.60) based on a full-time appointment (40 hours per week). The starting salary offered is determined based on knowledge and experience;
  • Attractive benefits package, including vacation pay (8%), an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, a generous number of vacation days, a pension plan (the employer pays 75% of the premium), and opportunities for professional development;
  • A one-year contract for 24–32 hours per week, with the intention of extending it for another year if the candidate proves suitable, and subsequently converting it into a permanent position.
