The Oranjehotel was the nickname for the Scheveningen prison during World War II.
At the Memorial Center, which opened in September 2019, visitors can learn about the fragility of freedom and what happened at this site during World War II.
Who will help make Oranjehotel Junior a success—a brand-new wing dedicated to education and young visitors?!
About the Oranjehotel National Monument
The Oranjehotel National Monument is an authentic war memorial that keeps alive the memory of the people who were imprisoned in this Scheveningen jail during World War II, often because they resisted the German occupiers. Their stories of fear, hope, and faith show how fragile freedom is and the choices people make when lawlessness, oppression, and persecution have society in their grip.
The NM Oranjehotel opened to the public in September 2019. We have a small permanent staff and could not operate without the dedication of approximately 100 volunteers, including 15 museum docents. Starting in September, Oranjehotel Junior will open its doors to students in upper elementary school and secondary school (VMBO/HAVO/VWO). During weekends and school vacations, the cell block is also open to young individual visitors.
What will you be doing:
- For the new educational program: sharing experience and knowledge with volunteer museum docents; responsible for ensuring the ongoing delivery of high-quality instruction. You will organize content-based training sessions for the museum docents and train new docents.
- You ensure that school visits run smoothly, encourage museum educators to work independently, and are able to improvise and lead a museum lesson yourself.
- You maintain the educational programs through assessments and evaluations.
- You will work closely with the office manager on scheduling and on-site operations, and you will maintain regular contact with schools and other institutions.
- You incorporate different perspectives into the stories of the Oranjehotel. Together with your colleagues in marketing and communications, you identify potential groups and know how to engage them. You know how to share knowledge in new ways with target audiences who might not naturally find their way to the museum.
- You have ideas about collaboration and activities and play an active role in organizing and carrying them out.
- You have knowledge of new media (video, audio, animation, live events, and scriptwriting) and know how to use them effectively.
- As part of the team, you’ll pitch in wherever needed.
We ask that you:
- A relevant degree from a university of applied sciences or a degree in public history. A teaching certification or training in pedagogy is preferred.
- At least 3 years of work experience, preferably in a museum, including, in particular, informal public education.
- An interest in World War II, an awareness of relevant social developments, and an understanding of the memorial center’s public and educational role.
- Demonstrable experience in developing and implementing programs in the field of cultural education.
- You have strong writing skills, are organized, practical, flexible, and proactive, and you have a positive work ethic.
- You are a good communicator, a team player, and work well with others; you can handle unexpected situations and deadlines, and are accustomed to working with diverse audiences.
- You have knowledge of continuous learning pathways, relevant core objectives, learning objectives, and competencies.
What we offer:
- A stimulating and varied work environment in a socially and historically significant field, as part of an enthusiastic team.
- A 32-hour-per-week position for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension.
- We operate in accordance with the Museum Collective Bargaining Agreement. The position is classified in pay grade 8. The salary depends on age and experience.
- 8% vacation bonus and 3.4% year-end bonus
