More about this organization
A guide is explaining a classical painting to a group of visitors at the Rijksmuseum.

The Rijksmuseum is the Netherlands’ premier museum of art and history. Its collection comprises over 1 million objects from and about the Netherlands, spanning from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Currently, Prentenkabinet Online is hard at work cataloging and digitizing the extensive collection of the Rijksprentenkabinet. With this project, the Rijksmuseum aims to make the collection of prints, drawings, and photographs accessible to a wide audience via the Rijksstudio website. As you can imagine, it is of the utmost importance that the objects are handled, moved, and managed with care and expertise.

The Collections & Exhibitions Department is currently seeking a:

Management & Retention Specialist (m/f/x)

36 hours per week for a period of 12 months

Are you someone who works neatly, accurately, and in an organized manner? And would you be interested in helping to digitize the Rijksmuseum? If so, we’re looking for you.

Working at the Rijksmuseum

For this project, we are looking for someone who enjoys working alone in a storage facility, is very meticulous, and values organization and tidiness. It is also important that you are a team player and in good physical condition. Furthermore, it is important that you are driven, eager to learn, and enthusiastic, and that you find working with the Rijksmuseum’s collection both enjoyable and special.

You will be working in a team of seven employees, led by the Depot Coordinator.

What will you be doing:

  • The internal logistics of transporting items to the photo studios and back to the warehouses.
  • Ensuring that objects in the storage areas are stored in accordance with regulations and/or instructions, so that they can be easily located and their physical condition does not deteriorate.
  • Checking locations and updating location changes in the ADLIB collection management system.
  • The manufacture of shipping and storage packaging.
  • Work related to rotating the collection on display and setting up exhibitions.
  • Cleaning the objects on display in the gallery.

What you'll bring to the table:

We’re curious to learn more about who you are, where you’re from, and what skills you’ll bring to our team. We value your knowledge and personality just as much as your work experience or educational background. As a Management and Maintenance Associate, you must have:

  • A degree at the associate degree level, preferably in collection management.
  • Understanding of the biological, physical, and climatic conditions that affect the storage and handling of works of art.
  • Experience entering data into computerized systems.
  • A highly meticulous approach to work.
  • The ability to organize one's own work.
  • A solution-oriented approach and a desire to improve processes and procedures.
  • Residing in the Greater Amsterdam area.

What do you get in return:

  • A gross monthly salary between €2,485 and €3,111, based on a 36-hour workweek (scale 7 of the museum collective bargaining agreement).
  • 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
  • Full reimbursement of public transportation costs for trips of 5 km or more (up to a maximum of €345). The costs you incur when you park your bike in a secure bike rack at the station are also fully reimbursed.
  • After your probationary period, you will receive a Museum Year Card that grants you unlimited access to 450 museums in the Netherlands. You are always welcome at the Rijksmuseum (during opening hours) with one guest.
  • Participation in various events and sports activities, such as the Rijkshockey and the Rijksrun.

Apply now

Interested? Get started right away. Here’s how the application process works:

  1. Once we receive your resume and cover letter, our recruiters will get to work.
  2. If we see a good fit, we’ll schedule an initial interview. We’d love to hear about yourself, your experience, and what appeals to you about this position.
  3. Was this interview positive? If so, we’ll invite you for a second interview.

Are we both on board? If so, we’ll send you an offer, and hopefully we’ll see each other soon at the Rijksmuseum.

Applications will be accepted until February 2, 2023, via the application form on our website. The first interviews will take place on Wednesday, February 8.

If you have any questions or would like more information about the job opening, please contact Margje van Vugt (Depot Coordinator) at m.van.vugt@rijksmuseum.nl.
