Where Dan Brown’s *The Da Vinci Code*, 36 terabytes of archival data, and network management come together. That’s the KB in The Hague. And it’s the place where you, as a KB employee, use basic skills and digital inclusion to ensure that adults can turn to their local library if they’re struggling to participate (or stay engaged) in today’s (digital) society and need help with that. There, they receive assistance in developing their basic skills as well as answers to their information questions.
Will you make it happen?
You will be working within a national network of collaborating library organizations. The work is diverse. You will help translate our shared national ambitions into the local practices of today’s public libraries. You will do this by maintaining and expanding our collaborative networks, sharing knowledge and inspiring examples, building support, working in an impact-driven and data-informed manner, and by setting up pilots, projects, and incentive programs. Your work is highly relevant to society, and you make a concrete contribution to participation and self-reliance, as well as to empowering all adults in the Netherlands to participate (and continue to participate).
And there's more. You are the consultant who:
- helps expand and strengthen the network by connecting with organizations outside the library sector that are working on the same social challenges;
- supports collaboration with various organizations to coordinate interventions, activities, and projects.
You’ll be traveling around the country a lot, and you’ll also be spending a few days a week at our office building in The Hague.
What can you count on?
When you choose the KB, you’re also choosing excellent employment benefits. To be specific, your choice includes:
- a gross monthly salary between €3,241 and €5,141 (pay grade 10);
- a one-year contract with the possibility of a permanent position;
- a good work-life balance. You’ll get 42 days off, and we’re happy to discuss working from home and flexible hours with you;
- 100% reimbursement of your public transportation costs;
- pension accrual through the ABP pension fund, with the KB paying 70% of the contribution;
- a thirteenth month's salary (8.33%);
- These terms of employment (and more: see www.kb.nl/werken-bij/arbeidsvoorwaarden) apply to a full-time position of 40 hours per week. For the basic skills advisor position, a work schedule of 28–32 hours per week is required.
What is it like to work at the KB?
The KB is the national library of the Netherlands. What more people should know is that the KB is innovating. Because that’s exactly what we’re doing! Together with 500 colleagues, we’re committed to making the Netherlands smarter, more skilled, and more creative every day. We achieve this, for example, by collecting, preserving, and sharing all digital publications from and about our country. And by working together toward a digital, language-rich society where everyone can participate fully. For example, we’re here for the very youngest with storytime kits, for seniors with tablet courses, and for those with low literacy skills with language support. We tackle social challenges like these together with other network partners.
We embrace the differences among all our colleagues. In fact, we believe that differences make a team stronger. We see this firsthand in our Library Systems department. This team works on the basic skills program within the public library network, both within and outside the sector. The ultimate goal is to help vulnerable groups participate in society. The team consists of 15 colleagues. How do your 15 future colleagues describe the atmosphere themselves? As driven, informal, and motivated. In addition, the team possesses a healthy sense of perspective and humor.
