As a junior project assistant, you will help prepare for the Freedom Dinners on May 5. Together with two colleagues, you will work on the nationwide organization of these meaningful gatherings. The Remembrance and Commemoration Department of the National Committee for May 4 and 5 consists of nine dedicated and passionate staff members. In the run-up to May 4 and 5, the team is expanded to include several temporary staff members.
On May 5, people all across the Netherlands will join in for Freedom Dinners. We eat together to celebrate the fact that we live in freedom. At the dinner table, you meet new faces, connect through the stories we share, and turn strangers into friends. Because food brings people together. Every year, more meals are organized: last year there were over 1,200 meals throughout the Netherlands, and the goal is to continue growing in the years to come. The National Committee for May 4 and 5 is responsible for the Freedom Dinners and strives to bring as many people as possible to the table on Liberation Day. We do this, among other things, by developing the annual Freedom Soup with a renowned chef and running campaigns about the meals. We also inspire organizers and support them behind the scenes with preparations, both practical and substantive.
For more than 35 years, the National Committee has been dedicated to commemorating, celebrating, and keeping alive the memory of World War II. Among other things, we organize the National Remembrance Ceremony on Dam Square on May 4 and the National Liberation Celebration on May 5, as well as Freedom Dinners and Liberation Festivals. In addition, we develop campaigns and educational projects and conduct research on how people commemorate and experience freedom.
