Whether you live by the sea or inland, have been in the Netherlands for generations or have just arrived—maritime culture touches us all. We make that connection tangible. The Scheepvaartmuseum is known as a leading and high-profile museum, with one of the most exceptional maritime collections in the world and an impressive library. We show how shipping and the maritime world influence our daily lives—in the things we use, the language we speak, and the history that has shaped us. We tell stories of innovation and of inequality, such as the colonial past and slavery. In this way, we help visitors understand their place in a shared past—and encourage them to reflect together on the future.
With a strong and diverse program, the Maritime Museum caters to a wide audience: from museum enthusiasts and day-trippers to school groups, heritage lovers, and young people. The historic waterfront building is also a stunning venue for a variety of events, such as conferences, concerts, weddings, and presentations.
The Project Office is part of the Program & Public cluster and works on exhibitions and presentations that connect the maritime past, present, and future. We tell stories about trade and migration, shipping and slavery, innovation and imagination—and how maritime culture is visible in everyday life. We draw on our rich collection, contemporary art, audiovisual resources, and collaboration with communities to create meaningful, multi-layered presentations for a broad audience.
