Innovation is one of the Rijksmuseum’s core values. For example, we have a presence in Minecraft, we developed a navigation app for the visually impaired, and we are exploring the pros and cons of AI, among other things. To embed innovation more deeply within the organization, the Rijksmuseum launched its Innovation Lab in 2019. We are currently seeking a dynamic Innovation Coach for this lab.
At the Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab, we use experiments to explore the value of new technology for the museum. As an Innovation Coach, you play a crucial role in engaging partners, establishing the right collaborative agreements, and identifying the right people within the museum. In this way, you build the team, guide them, and shape the experiment. You are indispensable to this process. You will lead the Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab and be able to engage at all levels.
What will you be doing?
You will be responsible for coordinating the Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab and its associated experiments in digital innovation, as well as ensuring their progress and outcomes. For each experiment, you will ensure alignment with the organization’s innovation needs and facilitate the sharing of results. Your responsibilities will also include:
- Identifying opportunities for innovation: you monitor trends and developments and translate them into opportunities for the Rijksmuseum.
- Sharing insights, knowledge, and developments by, for example, organizing workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Creating opportunities within the ecosystem for the Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab and soliciting proposals for experiments.
- You keep the Rijksmuseum and its innovation partners up to date on current developments and continue to build the Innovation Lab’s external network.
Working at the Rijksmuseum
Innovation is one of the Rijksmuseum’s core values. The Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab addresses digital innovation challenges from all departments and, where possible, turns them into experiments. As an Innovation Coach, you are therefore constantly connected to the entire Rijksmuseum, from the shop floor to senior management. Based on the experiments, you collaborate with and guide rotating teams consisting of expert users from the departments and, where necessary, with external partners, educational institutions, or other innovation partners. You will be supported by a team from the Rijksmuseum Innovation Lab and receive guidance and advice from the Innovation Editorial Board, composed of department heads and chaired by the Executive Director.
Who are you?
We’re eager to learn more about you and the talents you’ll bring to our team. This role requires creative and innovative leadership: you spot opportunities and can drive innovation. You’re analytical and a strong communicator: you can translate ideas into a concrete, compelling plan of action. You’re not afraid to build connections where needed and to network both within and outside the organization. And specifically:
- College- or university-level work and thinking skills.
- At least 3–5 years of work experience.
- Experience as a project manager and in leading workshops, sessions, and agile projects.
- Knowledge of and experience with innovative processes such as agile working, design thinking, and the lean startup method.
- An affinity for the cultural sector or experience working with museums.
- Knowledge of digitization and IT.
We offer
As an Innovation Coach, you’ll work at one of the world’s leading cultural institutions. You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with passionate professionals both in front of and behind the scenes at a major, internationally oriented museum. This is a unique chance to get to know the Rijksmuseum like no other and to help build a museum that’s ready for the future.
In addition, we offer:
- A gross monthly salary of €3,468 to €4,506 per month based on a 36-hour workweek (scale 10 of the museum collective bargaining agreement). 8% vacation pay and 3.4% year-end bonus.
- A one-year contract with the possibility of renewal.
- The flexibility to alternate between working from home and working in the office, including a budget to set up your home office to your liking.
- Full reimbursement of public transportation costs for trips of 5 km or more (up to a maximum of €345). The costs you incur when you park your bike in a secure bike rack at the station are also fully reimbursed.
- After your probationary period, you will receive a Museum Year Card that grants you unlimited access to 450 museums in the Netherlands. You are always welcome at the Rijksmuseum (during opening hours) with one guest.
- Participation in various events and sports activities.
