The Gerrit Rietveld Academy is seeking aSenior Lecturer inVAV-Moving Image for 16 hours per week (0.4 FTE).
The academy is characterized by an inquiry-based and experimental approach to art education, in which professors, lecturers, workshop staff, students, and administrative staff work together to shape the content and structure of the academy’s educational and research programs. Diversity and inclusion, ecology, and sustainability are key priorities for the GRA and thus serve as guiding principles for the actions of the members of the academy community.
Day-to-day management is the responsibility of the Executive Board (CvB), which reports to the Supervisory Board (RvT). The academic programs are supported by a large number of departments and administrative units, such as Financial Administration, Student Affairs, IT, Facilities Management, Public Rietveld, and the Human Resources department. The academy has approximately 280 employees.
The department focuses on the courage to create. Students explore various disciplines such as film, video, sound, animation, performance, and installations. It is precisely at the intersection of image and sound, the analog and the digital, the factual and the fantastical, that unique works of art emerge.
The department also organizes various projects and film workshops and provides instruction in software programs relevant to the various disciplines.
The supporting theoretical research is conducted from a critical and inclusive perspective. This makes it possible to delve ever deeper into the self-selected thematic areas and arrive at a clear articulation of the artist’s position within the cultural field and the world in which we live.
The department strongly encourages the head instructor (a 0.4 FTE position) to also teach courses or carry out other educational activities as part of their appointment. We view this as an essential part of this central role, as it allows the head instructor to stay connected with the entire student body. Organizing field trips and art events is part of this.
The nature of our program requires a willingness to spend a significant amount of time on campus and to work flexible hours (attending open houses, exams, evaluations, etc.). You will serve as the visible hub of the department and will be able to adapt on the fly to whatever comes up on a daily or weekly basis. VAV is a horizontally managed department, not top-down.
In consultation with the administration, faculty, and students, you, as the head of the department and with the support of a department assistant, will lead the department’s educational development process in a way that aligns with the professional field and fits within the academy’s long-term vision.
Together with the administration, you will be responsible for further developing and promoting the academy’s identity. You will also work with fellow department heads to ensure consistency across the GRA’s academic programs.
In addition, a department head at the GRA is also a manager—someone who takes responsibility for and contributes to the development of a team of instructors. Interpersonal skills are therefore essential. As a department head, you are also responsible for monitoring your budget and ensuring that all work and decisions align with the established financial guidelines. You ensure that both staff burnout and budget overruns are prevented.
You possess the skills required for this position, such as: analytical thinking, the ability to handle stress, the ability to keep things in perspective, decisiveness, and a zest for life. You have demonstrated the ability to handle conflicting interests and have experience leading professionals and managing budgets. You are responsible for the quality of the program, student support, staffing/departmental organization, and managing the department’s budget.
This job opening is for a salaried position. If you are a non-EU national, it is important that you hold a valid residence permit.
This job opening has been posted internally and externally at the same time. If candidates are equally qualified, internal candidates will be given priority over external candidates.
