Toneelschuur Productions is seeking a head of production to remain at the forefront of innovation in theater programming at venues across the country.
The Toneelschuur Producties Foundation (STP) mentors young talents to become the directors and artistic leaders of the future. Toneelschuur Producties is the resident company of De Schuur in Haarlem, and we share facilities and staff. With a diverse program, De Schuur offers plenty to experience for all ages in the fields of theater, film, dance, spoken word, music, and contextual programming. Because we passionately believe in artists as key innovators, we give them as much space as possible. We do this by optimally facilitating the encounter between audience and artists on our stages and through the sharing of stories.
Gaining experience through full-scale productions for general audiences is crucial for honing one’s craft as a director. That is why STP’s multi-year talent development programs focus on creating complete theater productions that are performed in small and medium-sized venues throughout the Netherlands. Together, we are leading the way in revitalizing the theater offerings on national stages. Toneelschuur Producties is included as a development institution in the national basic infrastructure 21-24 of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and receives multi-year support from the City of Haarlem.
Since our current head of production has taken a new job, we are looking for an enthusiastic
Head of Production, Toneelschuur Productions (M/F/X)
32–40 hours per week
What will you be doing?
You will ensure the smooth artistic and business operations of the production company, with responsibility for talent scouting, mentoring theater artists, and co-developing artistic and content-related projects as the basis for collaboration with artists at Toneelschuur Producties. You will draw up schedules and budgets for productions, labs, and other activities. You will be responsible for assembling artistic and technical teams for each production in collaboration with the respective director. A solid foundation has been laid for the 2021–2024 period, which you, as Head of the Production House, will help further develop and refine. You know how to create a safe work environment in which fair practices, inclusion, and social safety are key priorities.
As Head of Production, you will help secure and report on funding from public grantors and private foundations, network within the cultural sector, and oversee the sale of our own productions to touring theaters. You will share representative duties with the Executive Director. You will manage the Production Manager and Head of Marketing at Toneelschuur Productions and can rely on support from the shared secretarial and financial-administrative department with De Schuur.
Together with the Executive Director, you will develop future-proof policies at the strategic level and ensure they are effectively implemented in daily operations. As a key leader, you will play a major role in developing plans for the next arts planning period and assembling a new creative team in collaboration with the Director.
The current head of production also serves as a programmer on De Schuur’s broader programming team, where you’ll contribute your knowledge of the creative scene and book performances. We prefer a full-time position so that this dual role can continue.
We are looking fora
You are a driven individual with well-developed artistic judgment and mentoring skills. Using your dramaturgical knowledge, you support creators in their choice of pieces and encourage them to take maximum artistic risks in their development. You have relevant work experience in the field of production. You understand how to support emerging artists in their work and further development, including by providing in-depth feedback on the evolution of their performances—for example, following rehearsals. You have financial acumen, are familiar with the cultural funding system, and have a strong professional network.
You have strong leadership skills, proven organizational abilities, and excellent verbal communication skills. You can handle time pressure well and are willing to work irregular hours.
Even if you don’t yet have all the qualifications listed above but feel that “this is the job for me!”, we warmly invite you to apply.
What We Offer
We offer you a versatile position based on a one-year contract. If you prove to be a good fit, an extension is, of course, a possibility. Toneelschuur Producties, together with De Schuur, offers an inspiring, informal work environment in the center of Haarlem with a team of passionate and enthusiastic creators and staff members. You’ll share an office with the managing director of De Schuur/Toneelschuur Producties. The position is classified under Scale 8 of the Theater and Dance Collective Bargaining Agreement, with the possibility of advancing to Scale 9 depending on age and experience.
We value diversity
At De Schuur, we welcome audiences from all corners of the city and the region, and we work with artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. That’s exactly what makes our work so enjoyable. We value diversity at all levels within the organization, and all colleagues are equal members of the Schuur team. It goes without saying, then, that we invite everyone to apply, regardless of your age, gender, cultural background, who you love, or what you believe.
