The Function

The current Financial Administrator is set to retire. We are therefore looking for an experienced Financial Administrator to join Bellingcat’s Operations Team. Your role will involve managing all aspects of the financial administration for Bellingcat’s three entities: a Dutch “Stichting” with ANBI status, the Dutch Bellingcat Production BV, and the Bellingcat Fund based in the United States.

The role’s main objectives are to ensure the timely, accurate, and consistent processing of financial data, and to organize and optimize financial administrative processes.

Responsibilities include:

Prepare and process invoices, payments, and other financial documents
Maintain detailed financial records and prepare accurate and complete financial data
Review and process various reimbursements
Prepare and analyze financial statements and reports (for projects, monthly, quarterly, and others), and assist with periodic financial procedures and other reports
Internal and external financial reporting in compliance with the requirements of tax authorities, donors, and the organization
Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
Analyze financial data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities ·
Prepare multi-year budgets and the latest financial estimates for the organization
Manage and oversee financial reporting and accounting for Bellingcat's affiliate entities
Perform other administrative duties
Prepare the annual financial statements for external audit.
Manage and maintain personnel and payroll administration
Various (international) tax-related tasks, such as payroll tax and VAT filings

Bellingcat is an independent collective of international researchers who use open-source and social media investigations to probe conflicts, corruption, crimes, disinformation, extremist groups, and much, much more. They have received multiple awards for their research and publications that shed light on wrongdoing. Their community (which includes 35 staff members, numerous contributors, and hundreds of volunteers around the world) works in a unique field where technology, forensic research, journalism, and the advancement of justice and accountability converge. In the Netherlands, you may know them for their role in providing evidence analysis regarding the downing of flight MH17.

The salary range, including vacation pay, is between 50,000 and 65,000 EUR per year gross, depending on experience and track record.

Additional benefits include 25 (twenty-five) days of paid vacation per year, a salary guarantee (70%) in the event of prolonged illness, a pension plan, an annual budget for professional development, and annual paid sabbatical leave (the latter two are subject to eligibility).

This is a position with an initial one-year contract. The contract includes a three-month probationary period. Depending on performance, the contract may be extended or converted to a permanent contract at the one-year mark.

Your Profile

You are an experienced professional in finance, accounting, and control. You have an interest in journalism, international relations, or the nonprofit sector in general. You have a hands-on approach, are detail-oriented, approachable, and a team player. You are willing and flexible enough to take on other responsibilities when necessary, and are comfortable working in an international environment with people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.

At least 6 years of experience in financial administration or accounting and a proven track record in either the for-profit or nonprofit sector (experience in both is a plus)
Completed a professional degree (minimum bachelor's or associate's degree) in Finance, Management Accounting, Accounting, or a related field
Experience with Dutch accounting standards for the annual financial statements of NGOs is a plus
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English
A solid understanding of the Dutch tax system
Experience with VAT regulations (in EU countries)
Proven track record in working with financial software systems (Exact Online)
Strong communication skills for working with various stakeholders (auditors, funders, tax authorities, payroll providers, etc.)
Professional and precise, with a proactive approach to taking ownership of your work
Independent, yet team-oriented
Eager to learn and grow in an international work environment
