The Zaanstreek Secondary Education Partnership (SVZ) is seeking a teacher/counselor for the Zaanstreek Vocational Preparation Program for a 0.5 FTE position spread over three days a week.
Quality education for every young person
All young people have the right to a quality and appropriate education. For some students, this means they need extra support. At SVZ, we work together to provide the best possible educational environment for all students in the Zaan region. All secondary (special) education schools operated by school boards active in the Zaan region are affiliated with SVZ. In addition, we collaborate with primary schools in the Zaan region and the Primary Education Partnership. We also work together with the municipalities of Zaanstad, Wormerland, and Oostzaan, as well as with various youth services organizations. We do this based on our core values: trust, optimism, and courage.
Our shared goal is for our students to:
- attend a regular secondary school in the area
- receive the support they need to pursue an education at an appropriate level and
- be on track to earn a degree and/or secure a stable position in society.
Collaborating through the OPDC
SVZ’s Orthopedagogical and Didactic Center (OPDC) provides support and education for students who have difficulties with learning and/or social-emotional functioning. The goal is to reintegrate the student into mainstream secondary education as soon as possible.
The OPCD offers a number of services for this purpose: the Knowledge and Expertise Center for Appropriate and Inclusive Education (KEC), the Time Out Placement, Customized Programs, and the Zaanstreek Vocational Preparation Support.
Career preparation improves opportunities
The Zaanstreek Vocational Preparation Program (BBZ) is designed for students in the upper grades of secondary school who, due to serious motivation issues or special circumstances, are unable to earn a secondary school diploma. This work experience program inspires them to pursue further education at the MBO level (usually the Entree program). The students attend school one day a week and work three days a week at an internship site. As a vocational preparation counselor, you serve as their teacher, internship supervisor, and mentor.
What will you be doing?
The guiding principle at BBZ is that students identify what goals are achievable and/or whether they need support to achieve them. You contribute to “quality education for every young person” by:
- One day a week, you will be responsible for the curriculum for a group of up to 8 students (Dutch, math, civics, career guidance and counseling, social and workplace skills, cooking, and physical education).
- You will mentor the students during their internship and provide guidance as needed. You will serve as the primary point of contact for both the student and the host company.
- You will help the student get acquainted with and get started in vocational education. You will keep a close eye on their progress during their first year of study.
- You will maintain contact with parents/guardians, social workers, secondary schools, (potential) internship companies, and vocational schools, and of course you will also ensure that attendance and performance, evaluation meetings, and interim developments are properly documented.
What do you need?
We are looking for someone who is truly committed to helping students succeed.
- You hold a secondary-level teaching certification in general education subjects and have several years of experience in secondary education.
- You have strong teaching skills and reflect on your actions. You understand each student’s individuality, see the person behind the behavior, and are able to motivate and guide young people.
- You are trustworthy, which means you say what you do and do what you say. After all, that’s what you expect from the young people, too.
- You work independently, are not afraid to make decisions, and know how to collaborate with others when the situation calls for it.
- You communicate openly and professionally with students, parents/guardians, people at the internship sites, and other colleagues.
- You are flexible, focused on opportunities, and understand that the work can vary.
- Familiarity with the Zaan region is a plus. The ability to easily connect with people in companies and organizations is a requirement.
What do we offer you?
- A versatile role in a challenging and informal work environment that offers plenty of opportunities for professional growth.
- You will work closely with colleagues from the other district-level services within the OPDC.
- The position is classified under pay scale LC of theCAO VO (up to €5,862 for a 1.0 FTE position). The other terms of employment also comply with the CAO VO. For example, you will receive an end-of-year bonus of 8.33% and an annual flexible work budget of 90 hours (for a 1.0 FTE position), which can be used as time off and/or monetary compensation.
- Mondays are school days; other workdays are subject to arrangement.
- You'll start with a one-year contract, which we'll convert to a permanent position if the collaboration goes well.
