Are you our new library assistant? Do you have an innovative perspective on the role of a library within an educational institution? We, the Academy of Architecture (AvB), are looking for aLibrary Assistant/Archivist (0.4 FTE/16 hours). Together with your colleagues, you will be the face of the library and contribute to its (digital) development and collection building.
You ensure that library users receive a warm welcome and enjoy a pleasant learning and working environment. You provide information and advice to students and faculty and assist them in searching for information, as well as borrowing and reserving materials. You are responsible for the educational archive and share responsibility for library tasks, such as the formal and substantive cataloging of (digital) information carriers. You are part of the library team, which collectively provides services to students and faculty. This includes supervising the library and ensuring that all materials are accessible. You will generally work during the day, but evening shifts are possible upon consultation.
The AvB is one of the leading design schools in the Netherlands. We offer master’s-level education and research in the three disciplines of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture (MSc). The academy also offers pre-master’s programs and minors in all disciplines. The (partially) interdisciplinary curriculum is one of the pillars of our educational vision. A distinctive feature of the academy’s design programs is the educational model: the combination of studying and working, known as the concurrent model.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday in the evening and on Friday during the day.
The academy is an inspiring, international community of 350 students, and in addition to approximately 40 permanent staff members—most of whom work part-time—it welcomes around 350 guest lecturers each year from the (international) professional field. The academy is part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) and is housed in a national historic landmark in the heart of Amsterdam. You can get to know some of our staffhere:.
We are building a sustainable future. The academy recognizes the urgency of the situation: many of the challenges related to climate change, water issues (sea-level rise and flooding), the circular economy and circular construction, and declining biodiversity (to name just a few) are complex spatial challenges. The academy sees it as part of its responsibility to equip future generations of designers in the spatial domain with the necessary knowledge and skills to play a meaningful role.
The AvB Library collects, manages, and maintains a specialized and unique collection in the fields of architecture, urban planning, and landscape architecture. The collection supports student education and includes printed materials such as books, journals, maps, and digital resources. The library team consists of two staff members, one of whom is you. The library is open five days a week (Mon–Fri). Because the AvB focuses primarily on evening classes, the library is mainly open in the evenings.
The AvB consists of a small team of permanent and temporary staff. Within the academy, we strive to create an inclusive learning and working environment that serves as the foundation for quality, new ideas, and creativity. Students, faculty, and staff should feel welcome and valued at every level of the organization and be given the space to develop their talents. This is a priority in the curriculum, the composition of student and faculty groups, and within the team. We form a close-knit community that we cherish.
The Academy of Architecture offers a pleasant working environment in a central location in Amsterdam. The position is classified in pay grade 8 (minimum €3,184.53 and maximum €4,208.14) for a full-time (40 hours per week) appointment. The AHK offers attractive terms of employment in accordance with the collective labor agreement for higher professional education (CAO-HBO), including an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%, an ABP pension plan, generous vacation time, a generous travel allowance, and opportunities for further education and professional development. This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of extension.
