Are you a policy officer who wants to make a difference? Would you like to help develop solutions to complex financial issues? Do you want to be at the heart of current events and work on policies that affect everyone in the Netherlands? Then apply now for the position of Policy Officer for Labor & Wealth!

Job Description

“The Labor & Wealth Department is a close-knit team where we work on taxes that affect everyone in the Netherlands, such as payroll tax, income tax, and gift and inheritance tax. This means you’re right at the heart of current events. I focus on policy and legislation related to self-employed workers, Box 2, and the charitable donation deduction. One moment I’m drafting legislation for Box 2, the next I’m helping the State Secretary prepare for a labor market debate, and the moment after that I’m consulting with representatives from the philanthropy sector about the charitable donation deduction. The combination of policy and legislation not only makes the work varied and dynamic, but also allows you to experience the entire process, from devising a measure to the publication of the law.” Bente Vendrig, policy officer

The homeowner tax deduction, personal tax deductions, and the business succession scheme. These are just a few examples of policy issues that directly affect residents and employers and are currently the focus of much attention. As a policy officer, you’ll help develop new policies and legislation related to these issues. Based in The Hague, you’ll help the Ministry of Finance find solutions to complex financial issues. And you’ll contribute to the political decision-making process. What about your own professional development? Of course, there’s plenty of room for that!

Contributing ideas on policy and implementation

Your responsibilities will likely focus on a combination of income tax and payroll tax. You will handle the tax treatment of self-employed individuals and personal deductions, such as the charitable donation deduction. This allocation may change due to political decisions. In the Labor and Wealth Department, we work on a wide range of policy and legislative initiatives. You will be involved in these from start to finish. You will work on complex issues, for which you and your colleagues will seek smart solutions. In addition, you will prepare for political decision-making and advise senior civil servants and political leaders on your dossiers. Furthermore, you will be involved in:

  • drafting policy papers
  • responding to parliamentary questions
  • maintaining relationships with stakeholders
  • contributions to legislative proposals

Would you like to discuss your potential future role in more detail first? If so, please contact Inge Groot, department head, at 06-11376588 or c.m.e.groot@minfin.nl.

Job Requirements

You thrive on challenges and come up with creative solutions for them. It’s important that you work well with others. Focusing on problems isn’t your style. You see opportunities. You are aware of political and administrative dynamics and handle them with ease. You enjoy tackling multiple tasks at once. You’re good at staying calm while doing so. That’s important, because we work in an environment where changes happen rapidly. You can explain complex matters clearly and concisely. Additionally, you bring:

  • a university-level standard of work and thinking
  • good spoken and written Dutch
  • an interest in, and perhaps even work experience with, current issues in the field of taxation
