The position
As a mid-level Diversity Policy Advisor, you will be responsible for developing and implementing policies related to anti-discrimination and empowerment.
You will do this in close collaboration with the department’s senior advisors. You will draft policy documents, prepare project proposals, and advise management and the board on various issues related to diversity initiatives. You will do this at both the strategic and tactical levels. Granting subsidies is an important part of the job, so you will also serve as the account manager for grant relationships.
The department deals with social issues, as well as many ad-hoc questions arising from current events. We are looking for someone with proven organizational skills. You proactively seek out opportunities to collaborate with other teams, departments, partners, and stakeholders in the city. You have an affinity for issues related to anti-discrimination, empowerment, and inclusion in the city. Examples of the topics we work on include: the Meldpunt discriminatie.nl hotline, Pride policy, the legacy of slavery, gender equality, women’s rights clinics, Keti Koti, etc.
In this role, you will be responsible for a number of cases, advising management and the mayor and aldermen in close consultation with a senior advisor. You will also be responsible for implementing policy.
Here's what you do on an average day
- You will develop proposals for initiatives and projects based on the 2023–2026 Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Policy. You will present these proposals to management and the board.
- You will manage relationships with internal and external partners at the tactical level.
- You will draft administrative documents and oversee the (administrative) planning for the steps in the process.
- You will oversee and monitor financial and operational progress and report on these matters to management and the board.
- You are the account manager for grant relationships.
- In addition, you’ll help out with various tasks and assignments within the team, working closely with different colleagues.
This is where you get started
We strive to be a great employer that ensures all our colleagues feel seen and valued. We embrace the differences among our colleagues; these differences lead to better results for both our organization and our city. We aim to build a workforce that reflects Amsterdam’s diverse population. So, whoever you are, you’re more than welcome here!
The Diversity Department works to combat discrimination, promote empowerment, and foster a sense of community in Amsterdam. We translate the City Council’s ambitions and interpret social developments in the areas of diversity and inclusion. We translate these into concrete policy goals. We award grants and contracts to organizations that contribute to these goals. We maintain a network of relevant parties and individuals in the city and serve in an advisory capacity within the municipality. In this role, you will be working in a department of approximately 20 people.
To address societal challenges related to diversity, we are working on various substantive initiatives that are grouped into two teams: Emancipation and Anti-Discrimination. Examples of themes and projects within these teams include: MDRA grant funding, follow-up action research on anti-discrimination, the legacy of slavery, LGBTIQ+ policy, women’s and men’s emancipation, improving the position of transgender people, representation, etc.

You should have the following skills:
- Environmental awareness: You build and maintain sustainable relationships and collaborate with relevant internal and external stakeholders. You are sensitive to administrative, political, and social issues and are skilled at working within a complex and diverse city and organization.
- Collaboration: You are skilled at working collaboratively within a small team of experts, which helps prevent situations where tasks frequently have to be taken over by others.
