Since 1838, ARTIS has been a green oasis and gathering place in the heart of Amsterdam, where nature and culture come together. The historic ARTIS Park encompasses the zoo, the botanical garden, and the Planetarium. In addition, the ARTIS-Micropia museum inspires visitors with the invisible world of microbes, and the ARTIS-Groote Museum reveals the deeper connection between humans and nature. As a foundation and officially recognized charity, ARTIS is committed to strengthening our bond with nature, for a livable future for everyone.
Are you a passionate lawyer looking to make a meaningful social impact at one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful workplaces? Does the idea of tackling a wide range of legal issues in a casual setting excite you, and do you want to play an active role in bringing about ambitious changes in our beautiful park? Join our team and help build a greener world.
You will work alongside our other (full-time) in-house counsel as part of the Operations cluster. The cluster plays an advisory and service-oriented role within ARTIS and consists of four departments: HR, Finance & Control, IT, Digitalization & Data, and a staff department for QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) and Legal Affairs.
ARTIS is a multifaceted organization, which means you will encounter a unique and challenging variety of legal matters: from drafting and reviewing various types of contracts, compliance and privacy issues, to assisting with permit applications for major construction projects and managing the insurance portfolio. Together with the other in-house counsel, you will be responsible for all legal matters. To this end, you will formulate policy frameworks, provide advice, and take initiative at the operational level.
The specific tasks will be determined in consultation with you and will depend on your background and interests.
In carrying out these (and other) tasks, you will work closely with a diverse group of colleagues from nearly every other department at ARTIS. This includes our project managers for construction and renovation projects, the board of directors and management team when it comes to strategy and development issues, and our communications and events staff when organizing campaigns and events in the park. In addition, you will frequently liaise with external regulators, government agencies, and consultants. You will approach all of this with a compliance-focused mindset, enabling you to identify and manage risks while creatively addressing the challenges related to the various issues ARTIS faces.
ARTIS is looking for an all-around legal professional who fits in with the diverse and ambitious operations of our nonprofit organization. You are confident, have strong analytical skills, work quickly yet carefully, and enjoy taking the initiative. You are solution-oriented and can work effectively both independently and as part of a team. In addition, you have an affinity for topics such as nature, the environment, and education.
We believe it is important that you have a college-level education and at least three years of work experience.
Expertise and experience in contract law and/or administrative and environmental law is a plus.
ARTIS believes in the power of inclusivity and diversity, just as in nature, and aims to reflect society as a whole—regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, background, religion, or physical and cognitive disabilities. Together, we are working to create a livable world for everyone: now and in the future.
Imagine walking through the historic gates of ARTIS in the morning, where the gibbons welcome you with their songs. You’ll show the first visitors around, excited for the day ahead. During your onboarding, you’ll get to know all of ARTIS’s departments: from working in the gift shop to helping plant flower bulbs and cultivate microbes. Just like your work environment, your job is incredibly varied.
ARTIS offers you a job with responsibility and challenges at the most beautiful workplace in the Netherlands. A place where you can make a lasting difference. You’ll have a wide range of responsibilities and the authority to match, plenty of room for new initiatives and ideas, and at ARTIS, we maintain direct lines of communication between employees and managers. You’ll be versatile and work collaboratively with various departments at ARTIS to achieve results, all within an informal and friendly atmosphere.
We are initially offering you a twelve-month contract with the intention of extending it thereafter. ARTIS offers a generous travel allowance that encourages the use of sustainable transportation. You will also receive a contribution toward supplemental health insurance and enjoy discounts at other parks in the Netherlands.
In addition, ARTIS has a relaxation and prayer room, a gym, offers a fully vegetarian menu, and allows employees to exchange recognized holidays and commemorative days for other holidays such as Keti Koti and Eid al-Fitr. We also organize monthly get-togethers at our regular hangout, Eik en Linde, and employees can participate in events and lectures at ARTIS Park, the Planetarium, the Groote Museum, and Micropia.
