The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a full-time Associate for its Amsterdam office, which serves as a key hub for HRW’s development, fundraising, and outreach activities in the Netherlands. The Associate will provide administrative support to the Development and Outreach team in the Netherlands, assisting with internal and external communications, administrative tasks, and event coordination. The Associate will actively participate in team meetings and events related to human rights.
This is a one-year, full-time fixed-term position based in Amsterdam, with the possibility of an extension after one year. The Associate will report to the Netherlands Director. This role requires availability to work occasional evenings and weekend events. We expect the successful candidate to start this position no later than March 2025.
The successful candidate may have the option to work remotely, but will be expected to work from the office about 3 days a week.
Responsibilities:
- Support in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of HRW activities and events in the Netherlands, including the annual Voices for Justice fundraising dinner;
- Organize, communicate, and promote outreach events such as film screenings, researcher briefings, and expert panels in the Netherlands to raise awareness of and familiarity with HRW among a wider audience;
- Assist in maintaining HRW’s Salesforce donor database by updating records and information, generating financial reports, lists, and queries, overseeing data entry for special events, and ensuring the integrity and confidentiality of the data;
- Assist with gift processing, including acknowledgment letters and tax letters;
- Coordinate visits by HRW researchers to the Netherlands by handling logistics, drafting briefing documents, assisting with the preparation of presentations, and arranging meetings with government agencies, donors, and partner organizations;
- Support and assist in the creation of development materials, newsletters, emails, invitations, web content, and event-related mailings;
- Maintain and help grow HRW’s social media accounts in the Netherlands, primarily on Facebook and Instagram, as needed;
- Provide development and fundraising support by conducting prospect research, foundation research, translation tasks, and performing revenue reconciliation;
- Support the development of relationships with donors, partner organizations, and others, including monitoring the progress of these relationships;
- Support the Run for Human Rights Watch foundation by organizing regular meetings, helping to coordinate events and briefings for HRW researchers, and serving as the point of contact for all HRW-related inquiries;
- Provide administrative support, including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, conducting background research, and making travel arrangements as needed;
- Assist with the recruitment and coordination of interns based in the Amsterdam office, as needed; and
- Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
Education:A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required.
Experience: Aminimum of one year of relevant work experience is required. We are interested in hearing from candidates who may have previous work, internship, or volunteer experience that is relevant to the role.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
- Previous office or administrative experience and strong organizational skills are required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Dutch are required.
- The ability to work under deadlines while handling multiple tasks at the same time is required.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including MS Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), is required.
- Experience in planning and executing virtual and/or hybrid events is preferred.
- Professional experience with Salesforce or similar database systems is preferred.
- Any of the following skills would be considered an asset, but are not required: fundraising experience, social media outreach, or grant writing.
- A strong interest in international human rights, event management, and fundraising is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences are desirable.
- Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision, work independently, and collaborate effectively as part of a global team are desirable.
