📍 Location: Leiden | 🕒 Employment type: Part-time | 📅 Start date: To be determined, preferably as soon as possible

Are you an enthusiastic archivist (m/f/n) who has strong ties to the Dutch disability community and, preferably, personal experience with disability?

Then the Kreukelcollectief is looking for you!

Who are we? Where will you be working?

In 2025, theKreukelarchief will open in Leiden, the firsthistoricaland cultural center dedicated to disability in the Netherlands. The Kreukelarchief is the premier venue for preserving, researching, and experiencing the history of the social status and emancipation of people with disabilities. It is the first archive in the Netherlands to focus on disability, not only in its collection but also in its structure.

At the Kreukel Archive, we collect materials that are significant to the Dutch disability rights movement. It is not only important to preserve this history from the perspective of people with disabilities themselves. We also hope that the collection will inspire people and (heritage) institutions both today and in the future.

The archive has the potential to be incredibly diverse: from artistic expressions to literature and newspaper clippings, from collective protests to individuals blazing new trails. We supplement books, articles, and other texts with audiovisual material, including photographs and oral history interviews. We combine existing historical sources with new objects and stories. This creates a vibrant archive. It takes shape not only physically but also digitally. The entire collection is digitized and made accessible online to a broad audience.

The driving force behind the Kreukel Archive is theKreukel Collective, a collaboration between disability rights activists, researchers, and creators. We are committed to compiling and sharing the heritage of the Dutch disability rights movement, including through various public history websites focused on disability.

What will you be doing?

  • You will build a sustainable, accessible physical and online infrastructure . This infrastructure will house existing and future archival and collection materials.
  • You will be responsible for making archival and collection materials accessible, inventorying them, cataloging them, and digitizing them.
  • You will develop an acquisition and processing policy for new archival and collection materials.

What do you bring to the table?

  • You have a degree in archival studies at the associate’s level or another relevant degree. You also have demonstrable experience with the tasks listed above.
  • You have knowledge of disability, ableism, the social model of disability, and relevant legal and policy frameworks.
  • You are also sensitive to other forms of exclusion and discrimination, such as racism and sexism.
  • You can work both independently and collaboratively in teams made up of people from diverse backgrounds
  • You have proven experience with co-creation and direct collaboration with experts by experience.
  • You find it challenging to build a collection from the ground up.
  • You see and create opportunities in this pioneering work.
  • It would be an advantage if you have ideas on how to present the collection to a wide audience, both digitally and in person.

What do we offer?

  • The position is for a maximum of 0.9 FTE. A smaller workload is negotiable.
  • The appointment is temporary for one year, with the possibility of extension.
  • Salary will be determined based on knowledge, skills, and experience and will fall within pay scale 9 (€3,463 to €4,500), scale 10 (€3,768 to €4,897) or scale 11 (€4,131 to €5,516) of the Museum Collective Labor Agreement (scale amounts as of July 1, 2025, of the gross monthly salary for a 1.0 FTE (36 hours) position).
  • Location: Leiden (partially flexible, subject to agreement).
  • In this role, you will work closely with the working groups and board of the Kreukelcollectief, the project coordinator, and an advisory board.
  • Together with you, we create the best possible working conditions.
