Are you an enthusiastic archivist (m/f/n) who has strong ties to the Dutch disability community and, preferably, personal experience with disability?
Then the Kreukelcollectief is looking for you!
In 2025, theKreukelarchief will open in Leiden, the firsthistoricaland cultural center dedicated to disability in the Netherlands. The Kreukelarchief is the premier venue for preserving, researching, and experiencing the history of the social status and emancipation of people with disabilities. It is the first archive in the Netherlands to focus on disability, not only in its collection but also in its structure.
At the Kreukel Archive, we collect materials that are significant to the Dutch disability rights movement. It is not only important to preserve this history from the perspective of people with disabilities themselves. We also hope that the collection will inspire people and (heritage) institutions both today and in the future.
The archive has the potential to be incredibly diverse: from artistic expressions to literature and newspaper clippings, from collective protests to individuals blazing new trails. We supplement books, articles, and other texts with audiovisual material, including photographs and oral history interviews. We combine existing historical sources with new objects and stories. This creates a vibrant archive. It takes shape not only physically but also digitally. The entire collection is digitized and made accessible online to a broad audience.
The driving force behind the Kreukel Archive is theKreukel Collective, a collaboration between disability rights activists, researchers, and creators. We are committed to compiling and sharing the heritage of the Dutch disability rights movement, including through various public history websites focused on disability.
