The built environment is evolving at a rapid pace. Innovative building materials, the transition to renewable energy, and climate-adaptive construction bring new risks. And all of this is taking place in a complex and densely built-up environment. In this challenging role, you will have the opportunity to use the preventive and reactive expertise of our fire department to ensure the safety of new development projects in our region.

What you will be doing

As a consultant, you are the leading specialist in the field of urban planning and physical safety. Together with your colleagues, you analyze, for example, the impact of climate-adaptive or bio-based construction and explore options for fire safety measures. You translate this into input for a safety section in an environmental plan. After an incident, you contribute ideas on the new challenges our emergency services face. Or you identify opportunities to reduce the impact on the area surrounding an incident. What spatial solutions can you propose to our partners? Based on your findings, you develop a strategy to ensure our living environment is designed safely.

You provide advice on feasible and effective measures to keep risks manageable. You translate this advice into input for our municipal partners’ planning tools: environmental visions, programs, and plans. Thanks to your expertise, you independently influence our partners’ complex spatial planning procedures. From the regional to the national level, you closely monitor all spatial developments. The following three components form the core of your role.

Networking and collaboration:As an ambassador, you’ll build a network. This involves collaborating within the policy network of the municipality and the Dutch Fire Service.
Influencing policy:You will help shape policy and legislation. For example, by participating in the Environmental Act consultation group or in a new municipal sustainability program.
Risk-based approach and consulting:Based on your analyses, you will develop input for spatial planning documents and help draft policies on effective measures.

University-level work and thinking skills;
A degree program that aligns with the key aspects of the position mentioned above, such as:
Public Administration;
(Legal) Urban Planning;
Or what did you study that gives you the necessary knowledge?
Excellent writing and reading skills;
Extensive experience with network-oriented and project-based work;
Class B driver's license.

Here's what you'll get from us

The Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region is offering a position within a dynamic organization as part of a professional team, with ample opportunities for personal development.

Salary in pay grade 11(A): €4,267 to €6,551 per month based on a 36-hour workweek;
An individual flexible spending allowance equal to 18.63% of the gross annual salary;
Travel expenses are reimbursed at a rate of €0.14 per kilometer, with a maximum of 45 kilometers one way;
187.2 hours of leave based on a 36-hour workweek;
A generous pension plan through ABP, two-thirds of which is paid by us;
The option to work remotely with a work-from-home allowance of €3 per day;

The team

The Amsterdam-Amstelland Fire Departmentis part of theAmsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region. The Risk Management Division, a team of approximately 35 colleagues, is part of the Fire Services Sector. Risk Management advises the competent authority, external parties, and the board on preventing and mitigating risks of fire and other incidents. We are where we can have the greatest impact on creating a safe living environment.
