Help shape the future of ARTIS! Behind our mission lies a complex and ambitious organization. Two museums. A historic city park. An aquarium. A planetarium. 27 historic buildings. Major restoration and renovation projects worth over 100 million euros. Maintenance of an extensive real estate portfolio. Institutional, private, and corporate fundraising. An annual budget of 32 million euros. And an organization of 200 full-time equivalents and 375 volunteers working together to build a livable world. For this unique environment, we are seeking a unifying financial leader who not only ensures a solid foundation but also actively contributes ideas about the future.
ARTIS is more than just a zoo. It is a foundation where nature, culture, science, and heritage come together. A green oasis in the heart of Amsterdam where more than 1.3 million visitors a year marvel at and learn about life on Earth—all with the ultimate goal of taking better care of it.
As Head of Finance & Control, you will be responsible for ARTIS’s financial management. You will oversee the continued development of the finance function and serve as a strategic advisor to the Executive Board, management, and the Supervisory Board on strategic issues.
How do we finance future investments? How do we preserve our historic heritage? What decisions do we make to ensure that ARTIS remains financially sound and socially relevant?
You:
We are looking for a collaborative leader who can effectively bridge the gap between strategy and execution. You can seamlessly switch between reviewing an investment proposal worth tens of millions of euros, meeting with the accountant, and answering a colleague’s question about day-to-day operations.
You also have strong analytical skills, but understand that numbers only become valuable when they help make better decisions in practice. You have excellent communication skills and know how to inspire others. You thrive in an organization where entrepreneurship, social impact, and collaboration are central.
In addition, you should bring:
ARTIS believes in the power of inclusivity and diversity, just as in nature, and aims to reflect society as a whole—regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, background, religion, or physical and cognitive disabilities. Together, we are working to create a livable world for everyone: now and in the future.
Imagine walking through the historic gates of ARTIS in the morning, where the gibbons welcome you with their songs. You show the first visitors around, excited for the day ahead.
You’ll be working in one of the most beautiful places in the Netherlands, with short lines of communication, a great deal of responsibility, and plenty of room for initiative. You’ll not only be contributing to sound financial management, but also to an organization that helps hundreds of thousands of people reconnect with nature every day.
And that’s what makes this role different from all the others.
We are initially offering you a twelve-month contract with the intention of extending it to a permanent position thereafter. ARTIS offers an attractive pension plan through the ABP, with the employer contributing 70%, as well as a generous travel allowance that encourages the use of sustainable transportation. You will also receive a contribution toward supplemental health insurance and enjoy discounts at other parks in the Netherlands.
ARTIS also has a gym, a vegetarian staff restaurant, and offers employees the opportunity to swap public holidays for other days off. In addition, we organize monthly get-togethers at our regular hangout, Eik en Linde, and employees can participate in events and lectures at the Park, the Planetarium, the Groote Museum, and Micropia.
